Final Jeopardy: Women in Mythology (2-28-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/28/2018) in the category “Women in Mythology” was:

Poet & translator Anne Carson addresses her: “Your name in Greek means something like ‘against birth'”

2x champ Maryann Penzvalto has now won $28,602. In Game 3, she’ll test her skills against these two players: Laura McLean, from Nashville, TN; and Garan Geist, from Chicago, IL.

Maryann found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Racket Busters” under the $600 clue, with 3 clues left after it. She was in third place with $1,200, $4,200 less than Laura’s lead. She bet $1,000 and guessed Massachusetts. That was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ANTIGONE?

There are too many different meanings assigned to Antigone to tackle here but this one comes from “Antigonick” a 2012 translation of Sophocles’ 5th century B.C. play “Antigone” by Anne Carson, Canadian professor, poet and translator. At the start of the book in “The task of the translator of antigone,” Carson talks directly to Antigone, examining her name with observations on various interpretations by Bertolt Brecht, Jean Anouilh and Hegel, among others. See the preview of Antigonick on google books

There’s also a 2012 blog post offering an alternate meaning for Antigone on Literature & Human Rights, related to Seamus Heaney’s version of Sophocles’ play, “The Burial at Thebes.”

Maryann got it right. She bet $4,199 and finished with $8,399.

Garan thought it was Pandora. He lost his $3,201 bet, leaving him with $1,999.

Laura got it right, too. Her $1,199 bet brought her win up to $12,799, and Laura McLean is the new Jeopardy! champ. (But you knew that before FJ!, didn’t you?)

I wished Maryann would have bet more if she wanted to win the third game. After all, we are almost a month away from the college championships and the teachers, don’t you agree VJ? We had many streak of wins so when I get back we could see more.
