Final Jeopardy: Name the Novel (2-26-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/26/2018) in the category “Name the Novel” was:

“I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet”

2x champ Alan Harrison won $23,710 last week. In Game 3, he is up against these two players: Jonah Platt, from Los Angeles, CA; and Maryann Penzvalto, from Cleveland, OH.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “FRANKENSTEIN”?

The line in the clue is in the second sentence of Chapter 5 of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” which starts out: “It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishments of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life…” In the 1818 classic, Victor Frankenstein doesn’t say “it’s alive” as in the 1931 horror film with Clive Colin and Boris Karloff, or 1974 parody with Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle. He is overcome with horror at the monstrosity he brought to life. Listen to Chapter 5 on YouTube or read it on the Literature Network.

Jonah got it right. His $7,898 bet brought him up to $15,798.

Maryann got it, too. She bet $4,001, giving her $15,801, three more bucks than Jonah.

Alan came up with “Pinocchio,” eliciting audible gasps from the audience. He lost $10,201, dropping him down to $3,199. That made Maryann Penzvalto the new Jeopardy! champ.

Good luck Maryann…she seems very congenial and is smart as well.
Ironic that a librarian got the FJ correct — novels.

Sounded like Trebek still has his cold and I don’t mean when he did that Frankenstein grunt before revealing the responses– his voice sounded hoarse when he was saying “if you want to earn money in Final Jeopardy” before reading the clue. Then after results, he did the Frankenstein lurch walking towards the players. ha ha ha. My brother (a much bigger guy than Trebek) used to do that for the little kids who would pretend they were scared and run around screaming.

Have to admit, I was blown away by the Pinocchio response. In the original Collodi story, the wood that would become Pinocchio could already talk when Geppeto got it.

Congrats to Maryann on the win. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is one of my favorite novels of all time since it reminded me of the wishbone episode I saw that had similarities with this, VJ. Are you a fan of horror novels like phantom of the opera or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, VJ? Or perhaps sherlock Holmes?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I never much liked horror books or films unless whatever it was struck me funny. I like to watch stuff that makes me laugh, and not stuff that is scary or suspenseful. It’s funny though, I remember the old Frankenstein, Mummy and Wolfman films and also the Abbott and Costello monster series fondly.
