TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ALEXANDRIA?

According to “From Papyrus to Parchment”: “The library at Alexandria in Egypt had been an intellectual power house since it was founded by King Ptolemy I Soter in 295 BCE. Ptolemy set out to collect copies of all the books in the inhabited world…. Foreign ships that sailed into Alexandria were searched for scrolls, which were confiscated and copied. (According to Greek physician, philosopher and author Galen, the seized books were cataloged under a special heading: ‘books of the ships’.)” The website Antiquitatem translates several of Galen’s comments in an article about the “curious way” the Library of Alexandria acquired books.

I first heard the name Galen on a 1965 episode of “Gunsmoke”. It was the first name chosen for Doc Adams by Milburn Stone, the actor who played him. Another interesting trivia item on that episode says that “Galen” was a common nickname for doctors after the American Civil War.

Isabella thought it was Athens. She didn’t bet anything so her score remained $10,400, good buddy.

Ryan got it right. His $9,801 bet brought him up to $20,801.

Jackson got it, too. He bet $5,801 and won the game with $22,001. He is the 5th semifinalist. Because there are no Wild Cards in this tournament, there will be 4 more quarterfinal games next week.

Final Jeopardy (2/24/2023) Jackson Jones, Ryan Presler, Isabella Pagano

I think the players this week, win or lose, have been great at not giving up even when one player was dominating.

As for the $2K clue in Black History today, last Monday on Master Minds, the Ultimate Trivia Question asked for the author of the same poem (“On Being Brought from Africa to America”).

    • Jason says:

I was trying to recall where I had heard that! Thanks, VJ.

I thought it was a bit more challenging this evening

And, I’ll admit – I got FJ wrong. I said, like the third place participant, Athens. Oh well!

Ryan Presler: Hey, I tried getting my revenge on Avi Gupta. Um, not working. Jackson Jones, you have a chance at getting your revenge, though.

I was very impressed with Isabella’s bet in Final today. That is good for her! She knew that if Ryan bet to cover her and Jackson bet to cover Ryan, she would win the game by one dollar.
