Final Jeopardy: Capital Cities (1-29-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/29/2014), in the category “Capital Cities” was:

One of the 2 world capitals that end in the letter “Z”; one is in Europe & one in the Americas.

New champ Arthur Chu won $37,200 in yesterday’s game. Today he takes on these two players: Carolyn Collins, from Washington, DC; and Erik Post, from Essex, VT.

Arthur found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “In the Sport’s Hall of Fame” under the $1,000 clue. He was in second place with $3,400, $400 less than Erik and Carolyn, who were tied for the lead. He bet $5.00 and promptly said he didn’t know. So he was WRONG.

Carolyn finished in the lead with $4,600. Arthur was second with $4,595 and Erik was last with $4,400.

Arthur found the first Daily Double in “Art Terms” under the $1,600 clue. He was in third place with $4,195, $405 less than Carolyn’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “oil paint.” That was WRONG. (But it did solve Alex’s math problems).

This type of paint is dry pigment mixed with an emulsion; the egg type is not usually affected by weather & humidity. show

Arthur found the last Daily Double in “Official State Things” under the $800 clue. In the lead with $10,000, he had $600 more than Carolyn in second place. He bet $5,000 this time and he was RIGHT.

Located in the constellation Cancer, the beehive cluster is this state’s official astronomical symbol. show

Arthur finished in the lead with $18,200. Carolyn was next with $13,400 and Erik was in third place with $8,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS LA PAZ (BOLIVIA) or VADUZ (LIECHTENSTEIN)?

In 1898, in Bolivia, La Paz was made the de facto seat of the national government, with Sucre remaining the nominal historical as well as judiciary capital.”

Besides being the only European capital to end in Z, Vaduz is also one of the least populous (5,207 as of 2010).

Erik didn’t write anything down. He bet and lost it all.

Carolyn picked La Paz. She bet it all and finished with $26,800.

Arthur also picked La Paz. He bet $8,600 so he also finished with $26,800. And we have a tie, with Arthur and Carolyn both returning tomorrow. Arthur now has a 2-day total of $64,000.

Alex Trebek remarked that this FJ! should be a “piece of cake” and it really should have been. They didn’t have to come up with both and they were even told what continents to look at!

Jeopardy Calendar Question of the Day: ($1,000) Astronomy

In our solar system, the gap between these 2 bodies ranges from about 225,000 miles to 251,000 miles. show

No, John, I don’t know if the same 2 players or any 2 ever tied back to back. I didn’t watch the show for years after moving to TX, even though I was home from work in time, but I couldn’t remember when it was on! I missed a whole lot of shows while my clock was still on Eastern time.

I got both of these right off the bat. And really, even if they didn’t mention the continents, I still would have. My daughter bought me a Jeopardy calendar for Xmas and sometimes I think the questions on there are harder than the daily FJs.

That just gave me the idea to put the calendar question up every day, too.

Checking back, though, I found two tie games in January 2013 where one of the winners was the same lady, Kristin Morgan

1/14 – Countries of the World

      1/10 – Legal Terms

According to one of JBoard’s most reliable sources, a 4x champ named Sara Cox tied in two consecutive games in 1990, against two different players.

well, carolyn and arthur now know about each other. if they keep finishing 1 and 2 then they clean out j’s till real good ad infinitum…..

        • vj says:

yeah, carolyn and arthur can bet to tie if they want but with all the triple stumper FJs lately, can’t see it being a walk in the park. heh. Oh, and let’s not forget, if the FJ is a sports category, it’s gonna be adios arthur

        • john blahuta says:

they SAY that shows are taped and categories selected way in advance. but if they win 3,4 times together there will be a category where one or both will go down…..

SEE? just yesterday i talked about ties – again. and today carolyn had the benefit of 26.800.00 to show for the strategy to bet it all…… the second time in a row that arthur gave the second placed contestant the chance. j won’t be happy having to shell out the winning amount twice, but then they can afford it….

and this was an easy fj. liechtenstein borders right on austria and la paz should have been easy for any north/central/south american as well. in the next game carolyn will know that arthur shares the spoils, so if she finishes in second place again i wonder what her bet will be.
was it ever the case that the same 2 players tied back to back?? i’m sure you know that, vj!?

PS — Trebek said at the beginning of the show that they love to give away Big Money, so they must be in 7th Heaven today. LOL!
