Final Jeopardy: African Geography (2-18-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/18/2020) in the category “AFRICAN GEOGRAPHY” was:

This West African country of 12 million doesn’t border the 1,200-mile-wide gulf of the same name

New champ MacKenzie Jones, a program development director from Tulsa, OK, won $26,400 yesterday. In Game 2, her opponents are: Rex Wessel, an information security engineer from Alburtis, PA; and Caitlin Drinkard, a musician from Hamtramck, MI.

Round 1 Categories: 3-Word Cities – She Married That Rock Star – Buckets – Architecture – The 20th Century – Contronyms

Rex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Architecture” under the $800 clue, with 8 clues to go after it. He was in a tie for the lead with MacKenzie. They both had $2,600, $600 ahead of Caitlin in second place. He bet it all and thought it might be Gothic. That was WRONG.

This British style of architecture was ushered in beginning with the reign of Henry VII. show

MacKenzie finished in the lead with $4,000. Caitlin was second with $3,400 and Rex was last with $2,000.

Round 2 Categories: Speaking Volumes – Chemistry – TV-Pourri – That Used to Happen? – Religious Idioms – “V” End of the Russian Name

MacKenzie found the first Daily Double in “Religious Idioms” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick. She was in the lead with $6,400 now, $3,000 more than Caitlin in second place. She bet $3,000 but drew a blank so she was WRONG.

Something bad that later turns out to be good is one of these at first hidden signs of favor. show

MacKenzie found the last Daily Double in “‘V’ End of the Russian Name” under the $1,200 clue, with 4 clues left after it. In the lead with $9,400, she had $4,000 more than Caitlin in second place. She bet $3,000 again and, this time, she was RIGHT.

This scientist who worked with dogs also showed how the flow of the stomach’s digestive juices is controlled by the vagus nerve. show

MacKenzie finished in the lead with a runaway $12,400. Caitlin was next with $5,400 and Rex was in third place with $4,000.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GUINEA?

This video I included here might have a lot more info than you were expecting about the Gulf of Guinea, but it does tell you what is going on over there and it has a nice map of the area. You can see where Guinea is, too. The country of Guinea is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Wikipedia says the Gulf of Guinea is bordered by Liberia, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola. Some of these countries’ names are not shown on the map and some articles (and even a Sporcle quiz) don’t include the DRC, the Republic of Congo or Angola.

Rex went with landlocked Chad. He lost $1,401, leaving him with $2,599.

Caitlin chose Senegal, which has a southeastern border with the FJ answer. She lost her $2,601 bet, finishing with $2,799.

MacKenzie came up with Gambia, a country that is inside Senegal. Once again, she didn’t bet anything so she won today’s game with $12,400. Her 2-day total is $38,800.

In terms of memory, the last time I remember ”African Geography” being the Final Jeopardy! Category was almost a year ago, but not quite, when David Madden, an expert in Geography & a representative of Team Brad, dealt with ”African Geography” as the category, wagered $20,000, because he liked that number, and he did not embarrass himself, by getting it right about Senegal & Somalia. Way to go, David!

That was a tough Final. I had Senegal.

MacKenzie is good, but lacking. I doubt she will win 5 games. She should get back to church.

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

What an impressive win for MacKenzie, she won two games. Tomorrow she will play against two males. How many games does a female champion plays against two males this season.

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

Tough FJ as no one knows about Geography.

Well a decently played game, reminded me of Rob woman’s second game where they all missed final jeopardy. Still Mackenzie made a wise choice not to bet anything even if she missed final. I thought everyone knew about African geography, VJ? It’s unfortunate Rex couldn’t get much going and Chad is further up north and does not border Guinea.

At least the one day leader curse is over. Did you know Valerie Bertinelli’s former spouse? They have a son named Wolfgang
