Final Jeopardy: The Animal Kingdom (2-20-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/20/2018) in the category “The Animal Kingdom” was:

In Portuguese this bird is known as beija flor, or “flower kisser”

4x champ Rob Worman brought his winning up to $92,298 yesterday. A win in Game 5 will put him at the very top of the current ToC list. Let’s see how he fares against these two gents: Damien Marzocchi, from Kew Gardens, NY; and John Carlson, from Omaha, NE.

Round 1 Categories: They Quit the TV Show – Astronomy – Death, American Style – 4 “F” – March – Of Dimes

Damien found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Death, American Style” under the $600 clue on the 11th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,000, $2,400 more than John in second place. He went with a true Daily Double and thought it was Alexander Hamilton. That was WRONG.

We don’t think this Vice President had any inkling he’d be a character on Broadway 180 years after his Sept. 14, 1836 death. show

John finished in the lead with $3,000. Damien was second with $2,000 and Rob was last with $1,000.

Round 2 Categories: Languages of India – Your Number’s Up – Common Bonds – New Words in 1988 – Fruit Forward – A Wrinkle in Time

Damien found the first Daily Double in “Languages of India” under the $1,200 clue on the 6th pick. He was in second place with $4,400 at this point, $200 less than John’s lead. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

Rob finished in the lead with $15,200. Damien was next with $10,800 and John was in third place with $8,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A HUMMINGBIRD?

It’s hard to argue with the contention that the Portuguese “beija flor” is the prettiest name for the hummingbird. “Beija flor” and “flower kisser” are a bit more imaginative and melodious than Spanish terms “picaflor” (flower nibbler) and chupaflor (flower sucker), or the French oiseau-mouche (bird fly). There’s a whole big history of names that various cultures called the hummingbird on Google Books in “American Notes & Queries” (Vol. 4). There’s also a Paiute folk tale in “Celebrating the Earth” that talks about Native American hummingbird myths in “About the Story.” It says the Taino Indians believed hummingbirds were flies brought back as birds. Maybe that’s where the French got “oiseau-mouche” from.

From Hummingbird Facts: Hummingbirds don’t read books on what they are supposed to do and tend to do what they want.

John bet $1,000, bringing him up to $9,200.

Damien bet $10,000. That bumped him up to $20,800.

Rob bet $6,401 so he won the match with $21,601. His 5-day total is $113,899.

a very easy final jeopardy question. But for damian to not know the aaron Burr vs alexander Hamilton duel is just weird, VJ. Also how long were the hummingbirds around so far on earth? I am so glad that we got the next streaker for this month in mid february. I am rooting for Rob so he can win game 6. I can see Rob was going down a bit but he made a comeback in the end.

Hi Lou, originally I was going to say that Damien blurted out Hamilton but I rewatched that and it appeared that he just decided it was Hamilton as soon as he heard Broadway and totally missed the Vice President part. Me: “OH NOOOoooooo!!” Poor Damien. That surely made a difference for him. Anyhow, it was a costly miss but not half as weird as the “roid rage” response and Thanksgiving Day (for a parade in March)!

I think it was also apparent in this match that if someone wants to take Rob’s spot, they need to get to those DD’s before him! ha ha ha.
