Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Novel Quotes (4-4-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/4/2014), in the category “20th Century Novel Quotes” was:

“It was one of those pictures… so contrived that the eyes follow you… beneath” the picture was this 5-word quote.

On the final day of the Battle of the Decades 2000, these returning champs will vie for the last quarter-final spot in the May games: Keith Whitener, 7x winner, Season 29; Maria Wenglinsky, 5x winner, Season 22; and Dan Pawson, 2009 TOC winner.

Round 1: Dan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Vienna Calling” under the $1,000 clue. He was in the lead with $3,200. Maria had zero and Keith was in the hole for $600. With apologies to Roger Craig and Ken Jennings, Dan only bet $100. He took a guess with Paul but that was WRONG.

*In Video Games, the $1,600 clue was “Tom Clancy lent his name to this shooter series that might leave your finger smarting.” They wanted “Splinter Cell” but decided to accept Keith’s reply “Rainbow Six.”

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”?

Here is the full quote from: George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984”: “It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.”

April 4 (today’s date) was the date Winston Smith started his diary (in the year 1984), although he wasn’t sure that was the real date at all. How clever of the cluewriters to come up with this clue for this date. Perhaps they thought it was something the contestants could recall, but on the website Ink Tank, that little tidbit is included in a list of “14 little known facts about the writing of 1984.

Keith drew a blank. He lost $4,199 and finished with $1.00.

Dan wrote down “don’t get undressed near here.” Funny, but it cost him $3,000. He finished with $12,700.

Maria wrote down a title instead of a quote “The Portrait of a Lady.” That cost her $15,000 and the game. She finished with $3,100 and Dan Pawson won the last match.

All winners from the preliminary rounds of the Battle of the Decades.

I agree with Tom. Difficult to imagine Maria as a teacher. However, she’s smart! I love the relevancy of the the final question, but have to admit I wouldn’t have known the ‘answer.’

all candidates were either too young or forgot the lesson orwell was trying to teach us. 1984 is a classic, written in 1949…talk about clairvoyant. we are Waaaay beyond “big Brother”…

btw: funny, although j is on the air now for 50 years and the clue is in the form of an answer, and the reply in form of a question, we still call the clue “question” and the response “answer”, although it’s the other way around.old habits die really hard i guess.

Things are bad, now, yes, but we’re not quite “way beyond” Big Brother. We don’t have government TV cameras in every room in our house watching what we do. ………. Oh, we will, some day, but we’re not quite there yet.

You mean you didn’t like all the “uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhs” .

For the second time this week, I knew the FJ answer when all three of the alleged champions didn’t. What does that make me (besides a braggart)?

I do want to say for the record, not that anyone cares, that I was glad to see Maria lose, because she has such a weird personality. Why not just pick the damn category and amount without all the dramatics?

quite a few “teachers” have that attitude to demonstrate their “superiority”. just like cops try to intimidate you wearing reflecting sun glasses and touching their gun when they approach your car…..
other teachers are like real friends who CARE about their students. i had my share of both….just think back to your school days. you had teachers who were absolutely, well, you know, and then you had some you really LOVED, you were looking forward to their classes. i guess you have those different characters pretty much in every walk of life.
