Final Jeopardy: Colorful Geography (2-14-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/14/2019) in the category “Colorful Geography” was:

Named for a soldier killed in 1846 at the start of a war, it was in the news again as a port of entry to the U.S. In 2018

3x champ Eric R. Backes, an attorney from Round Rock, TX, is up to $91,201 now. In Game 4, his opponents are : Alex Miller Murphy, a public relations specialist from Washington, D.C.; and Mitch Rodricks, an attorney from Oakland, CA.

Round 1 Categories: The Top 25 Romantic Comedies – Quotes of Note – Brandimals – Mountains & Valleys – “Urry” Up – & Wait Tables

Mitch found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Quotes of Note” under the $800 clue on the 13th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,200, $1,000 less than Eric’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and guessed the French Revolution. That was WRONG.

Napoleon was heard to say that this, which he was part of, is merely “a fable agreed upon” show

Eric finished in the lead with $6,000. Mitch was second with $4,800 and Alex was last with $2,200.

Round 2 Categories: This Is 40: Literary Edition – 13-Letter Words – Space Science History – Kind-of-Person Magazine – Historic Supreme Court Cases – TV Rebooted

Eric found the first Daily Double in “Kind-of-Person Magazine” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. He was in the lead with $9,200 now, $400 more than Mitch in second place. He bet $2,800 and mispronounced the right response so he was WRONG.

A coin collector is likely to also be a collector of this magazine dating back to 1888. show

Eric got the last Daily Double in “13-Letter Words” under the $2,000 clue on the very last clue of the round. In second place with $12,800, he had $1,600 less than Mitch’s lead. He bet $1,700 and took a shot with “ecclesiastically.” That had too many letters so he must have know it was WRONG.

Grandstanding verbally & dogmatically, almost as if you were the Pope. show

Mitch finished in the lead with $14,400. Eric was next with $11,100 and Alex was in third place with $2,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BROWNSVILLE (TEXAS)?

In his 1885 memoirs, Ulysses S. Grant recalled the May 1846 siege of Fort Texas, the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma: “The siege had lasted a number of days, but the casualties were few in number. Major Jacob Brown, of the 7th infantry, the commanding officer [of Fort Texas], had been killed, and in his honor the fort was named. Since then a town of considerable importance had sprung up on the ground occupied by the fort and troops, which has also taken his name.” At the time, Grant was “a young second-lieutenant who had never heard a hostile gun before”.

Brownsville lies across the Rio Grande from Matamoros, Mexico. The cities are connected by four international bridges. Here is one article from the Associated Press on the situation there in Nov. 2018. Here is a 1/24/2019 Brownsville Herald article on the current situation.

Alex wrote down the Rio Grande. She lost her $600 bet and finished with $2,000.

Eric got it right. He bet $3,301, bringing him up to $14,401.

Mitch came up with Tijuana. That cost him $9,000 and left him with $5,400. That also gave Eric the game and a 4-day total of $105,602.

Final Jeopardy (2/14/2019) Eric R. Backes, Alex Miller Murphy, Mitch Rodricks

  1. VJ says:

@John, living in Texas had nothing to do with my prediction. I knew about Brownsville’s location and read about people migrating over its border when I lived in New Jersey. I came across its role in the Mexican-American War when reading about the Civil War figures who fought in both wars. It was more of an “if I know it than they must know it” thing.

Eric said he has only lived in Texas for a year during the chat.

When Alex gave the “less than a minute” warning, there were 8 clues. They chose the other 7, including one triple stumper, before Eric got the last clue. It was already over a minute when Alex said “that means you get the last clue.” That’s the second time I’ve noticed that in recent games (because I didn’t think they would make it to the Daily Double).

      @VJ
Looks like they go to all lengths not to leave a DD in DJ on the board…?!
Eric got it wrong but it didn’t matter in the end since he was the only one getting FJ right for whatever reason.

    • Albert says:

I have never heard of Brownsville, Texas. You learn something new every day.

      • VJ says:

Coincidentally, there’s another Brownsville named after a war hero named Jacob Jennings Brown, but he was a hero of the War of 1812 and his Brownsville is in Tennessee (that’s the one in the Delta Dawn song)

Another coincidence today — I would not have known that “slurry” clue if I had not seen this page about how they recycle paper with stuff written all over it yesterday

      • JP says:

It wasn’t mentioned in the clue, but Brownville’s primary claim to fame (at least in trivia) is that it is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States.

  2. Dal Higbee says:

I hope we finally get a 5-time champion tomorrow. Let’s hope Eric can be the first one of 2019.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

I thought that Eric could dodge and hand the win to Mitch, but he is the only one who got it right, and what did Mitch wrote down? Tijuana? No, that won’t do it. Tomorrow, he would be the ONE. A 5-time champion, that is.

  4. Lou says:

A win is a win for Eric and he may very well be in a position to overtake Alan Dunn in game winning totals. Alex couldn’t get any momentum going today sad to say but still, I hope the guy gets that streak we all been waiting for.

Did Mitch misread the clue in FJ and went for Tijuana John and VJ? This isn’t the Mexican American war. Plus, thirteen letter words isn’t really up in Eric’s alley

  5. John B./I. says:

Interesting how things sometimes are playing out. First of all congratulations to Eric for win #4. Being from Texas was maybe the reason why he was the only one getting FJ right (CA and D.C. not so much….) and could somebody please tell me what color TIJUANA and RIO GRANDE have…?

3 missed DDs led to a rather low total before FJ, but a win is a win is a win…IF Eric prevails tomorrow, he would most likely overtake Alan Dunn (120.802) and have a very secure position on the ToC list. If Eric loses tomorrow, then J! should really have the studio exorcised…..

PS- @VJ, You probably went with 3 because you live in TX for quite a while now, hence my guess that Eric did benefit from the same fact. Eric lucked out somehow that THIS was the FJ and the other 2 players had NO idea. The news coverage about the refugee situation in Brownsville was just one of many in 2018 and did not help much imo.

    • John B./I. says:

      PPS
The category “13 letter words” was named kind of misleading, you think of ONE word, “counting house” are 2…I almost bet all the other answers were 1 word?(Pontification/pontificating ?) Should have been the latter since the clue asked for a verb.

    • JP says:

Tijuana and Rio Grande do not have colors in them. I’m sure they had no idea, so they thought they’d at least write something down. Would you rather they had written made-up town names that did have colors, like Orangeville or Greensburg? One thinks in that case you would be sarcastically asking where such border towns exist.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

    Mary Ann Borer is out.

    • William Weyser says:

Well, yes, but Jackie Fuchs is out… AGAIN!, and John Presloid is going to be out as well, because of the 2019 JEOPARDY! Teachers Tournament.

      • John B./I. says:

        @William
Technically John is not out yet, since the TT winner will fill the spot that was voided with Larry sadly passing away. But by the time the ToC rolls around John will most likely be gone, together with a couple of others, unless the “jinx” continues and we have only 3 game winners at the most. Unlikely, but who knows? We are waiting since October now for a 5 game winner….(4 months!)

        • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. Yep, but who knows, he is ONE win away from breaking the drought.

        • William Weyser says:

John B/I, I know that John Presloid is not out yet, and the winner of the 2019 JEOPARDY! Teachers Tournament will fill that spot, after Larry Martin passed away. I’m just saying.

      • Richard Corliss says:

        Jackie Fuchs isn’t out yet.
