Final Jeopardy: Historic Places (2-13-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (2/13/2014), in the category “Historic Places” was:
Administered by the Army, its 1st graves were dug by former slave James Parks, the only one buried there who was born on the site.
In the 4th quarter-final of the 2014 College Championship, the contestants are: Eric Turner, a senior (Vanderbilt) from Huntsville, AL; Tucker Pope, a junior (Texas A&M) from Lubbock, TX; and Julia Clark, a senior (Harvard) from Saskatoon, SK, CA.
Tucker found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Historic Americans” under the $2,000 clue. He was in the lead with $4,200, $3,000 ahead of Eric in second place. He bet $2,015 (for the year he’ll graduate?) and guessed New York. That was WRONG.
Like his cousin Charles, Thomas Pinckney served as governor of this state. show
Eric finished in the lead with $5,600. Tucker was second with $4,785 and Julia was last with $1,800. She got dinged for $800 on a prior answer when we returned from the break, so she began the second round with $1,000.
Julia found the first Daily Double in “The Elements” under the $1,200 clue. She was still in third place with $2,200, $3,400 less than Eric’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.
Martin Klaproth discovered this element in 1789 & named it for a discovery of 1781. show
Julia found the last Daily Double in “Name That Shakespeare Play” under the $800 clue. In second place with $4,800, she had $2,400 less than Eric’s lead. She bet $4,000 and thought it was “The Comedy of Errors.” That was WRONG.
2 young royal brothers go missing, never to be seen again. show
Eric finished in the lead with $14,000. Tucker was next with $9,185 and Julia was in third place with $6,800.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY?
James Parks was born a slave in 1843. At birth, his owner was George Washington Parke Custis, step-grandson and adopted son of George Washington, who became Robert E. Lee’s father-in-law in 1831. Upon the death of “Wash” Custis, his property, including Arlington House, was inherited by his only child, Anna Mary Custis Lee. Custis’ Will stipulated that his slaves (about 200) be freed after his legacies and debts were paid, but no later than 5 years after his death, and Parks was freed in 1862. When Parks died on 8/21/1929, Secretary of War Henry Stimson granted special permission for him to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. (Find-a-Grave: James Parks)
Julia bet everything but $1.00. She finished with $13,599.
Tucker bet $2,185 (don’t ask us!), finishing with $11,370.
Eric bet $1.00 and won the semi-finalist spot with $14,001.
Now the Wild Card list looks like this:
Kevin Shen – $15,401
Julia Clark – $13,599
Laurie Beckoff – $13,400
Tucker Pope – $11,370
Cameron Kim – $10,800

THERE is a no brainer! how many cemeteries – that are historic places to boot- are “administered by the army?
so cameron is out and tucker might regret his wager should he miss by 30.00 bucks…
if both non winners tomorrow surpass 13.400 even laurie would be out. i was really sure she would make it. maybe monday’s game was the exception this week. that triple miss was really incredible. c’est la vie….
yeah, I thought Tucker looked a bit upset with himself over his little bet, since it put him behind Julie. Thought I saw a little grimace just before the screen moved over to Eric (who was grinning like the Cheshire Cat).
i wonder if the contestants know the standings of the wild cards. it would put the players in the early round(s) at a disadvantage and favour the contestants who play later since they could figure out on the dollar how much they would have to wager to get a wc?
