WHO IS THE DALAI LAMA?

On July 5, 2025, the day before his 90th birthday, Tibet’s 14th Dalai Lama posted this message on Instagram: “Strive not only for physical progress but for a peaceful mind and a kind heart — extending compassion not just to those close to you, but to all.” A global campaign called the Compassion Rising World Tour was already in progress, having been launched on March 10, 2025. In the USA, a congressional resolution was passed on July 14, 2025 officially stating that the Senate recognizes July 6, 2025 as a “A Day of Compassion”.

At about the 1 minute point in this video, the narrator starts talking about China’s plans to obstruct the Dalai Lama’s plans for his reincarnation.

Deidre thought it might be Jimmy Carter (1924-2024). She lost $4,000 and finished with $5,800.

Jacob got it right. He bet $7,801 and finished with $19,601.

Adam wrote down Rogers, and agreed with Ken that he meant Fred (1928-2003). Adam lost $99 but won the game with the remaining $24,901 for a 6-day total of $124,502.

What turned out to be a lock game was entertaining nevertheless. The challengers appeared to be toast early on, but both rallied beautifully, especially Jacob who said Mira Sorvino played Joe DiMaggio and made me wanna choke him. (I knew Marilyn’s other name.) And he’d have won the game if he’d just been closer entering Final. I’m pretty strict with my opinions of who should get a 2nd chance, but I’d give him one for sure.

I knew FJ couldn’t be MLK (born 1939) or Carter (born 1924) but blanked on the Dalai Lama. (A one-L lama is a Tibetan priest, a 2-L llama is a beast of burden, and a 3-alarmer is a really big fire.)

The FJ from 2 years ago was easy but the category was Sports, not Ports. I happened to be watching that game because I lived in LA and it was televised locally.

Knew the Adrien Brody character and guessed the failed amendment. Shame on them for not knowing the 19th century era. Definitely knew the Mexican troupe. Got only the middle DD but I’d wager big bucks VJ knew the last.

    • VJ says:

Yes, Howard, I got the 3rd DD. I didn’t get the first one, though, and only half of the 2nd. My knowledge of the elements is sketchy at best.

      • Howard says:

Elementary, my dear. I never took a chem class but I know a lot of the symbols and names. Science was always my weakest subject in school.

  2. Rick says:

It was another fantastic game, but it eventually morphed into a clear runaway for Adam. Well, I didn’t do too well in the game, and went with Jimmy Carter for FJ.

    • VJ says:

Color me surprised again. I thought it was common knowledge that Jimmy Carter lived to be 100. Therefore, he couldn’t possibly have been born in 1935.

      • Rick says:

Huh? Well gee VJ, Ken Jennings told Deidre that ‘Jimmy Carter’ wasn’t a bad guess. Was Ken wrong?

        • VJ says:

idk why Ken said that, Rick, but maybe he meant by picking someone with a reputation for kindness (which appears to be the case with Fred Rogers, too). However, both of those guys passed away before 2025. There may be no particular reason to know that about Fred Rogers but google “Jimmy Carter 100” and you’ll see all the headlines about his 100th birthday and subsequent passing.

Carter was the only US President who lived to be 100. That was already a clue in the 12/31/2025 game:

PRESIDENTIAL FIRSTS ($200) Reaching the mark in 2024, he was the first president to live to be 100

  3. Kevin Cheng says:

Happy Juneteenth! Adam has swept this week becoming the 6th player this season to win the entire week.
