Final Jeopardy: European History (12-29-25)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/29/2025) in the category “European History” was:

On January 20, 1649 he asked, “By what power I am called hither? It is not long since that I was in the Isle of Wight”

The last Week of the 2025 Second Chance Tournament begins today with these players: Keegan Olson, a consultant from Vancouver, British Columbia; Abigail Arnold, an academic administrator from Waltham, MA; and Mustafa Hameed, an attorney from Los Angeles, CA.

The links in their names will take you to each one’s original game, and you can see if their second chance was predicted in the comments.

Round 1 Categories: Let’s Give That Car a Second Chance – Worms Ate My Category – Taking a Spill – Flirting at the U.N. – The Emperors – New Groove

Keegan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Let’s Give That Car a Second Chance” under the $800 clue on the very last pick of the round. (They were obviously avoiding it!) He was in last place with $800 now, $5,200 less than Mustafa’s lead. Keegan bet $200 and he was RIGHT, as fate would have it.

Round 2 Categories: Bougie Neighborhoods – Biblical Women – Athletes in Public Service – Meaningful Anagrams – Nobel Lit Winners – 6, 7

Abigail found the first Daily Double in “Biblical Women” under the $1,200 clue on the 6th pick. She was in second place with $8,000 now, $800 less than Mustafa’s lead. Abigail bet $4,000 and she was RIGHT.

Abigail got the last Daily Double in “Bougie Neighborhoods” under the $1,600 clue, with 13 clues left after it. In the lead with $21,200, she had $10,000 more than Mustafa in second place. Abigail bet $4,000 again and she was RIGHT again.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS CHARLES I?

Charles I was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 3/27/1625 until 1/30/1649. Neither a wise nor a popular ruler, Charles’ insistence on the Divine Right of Kings led to the First English Civil War between his Cavaliers and Oliver Cromwell’s Roundheads. Defeated and put on trial for high treason, Charles refused to accept the court’s authority and rejected any compromises, even though it meant certain death and leaving his 6 children without a father. He was convicted and beheaded on 1/30/1649, 62 years after Mary, Queen of Scots, his grandmother, met the same fate.

In the 2018 College Championship tournament, Final Jeopardy! was about the state capital named after Charles I’s wife.

Keegan thought it was William of Orange (a grandchild of Charles I). He bet and lost his whole $5,800.

Mustafa thought it was Cromwell (who got a posthumous comeuppance later on). He lost $300 and finished with $11,700.

Abigail had James I (Charles I’s daddy). She bet zero, standing pat on her runaway $25,600. Abigail Arnold is our first finalist.

I do not know why my comment went as a response to Rick.

I was 0/3 on DD, but, got FJ! I always think, “James VI of Scotland, to James I, Charles I, break, Charles II, James II”. Interestingly, the current monarch is Charles III. Prior to him, the oldest person to accede to the throne was William IV, the immediate precursor to Victoria. And, who is the heir apparent? The man who will be William V!

As to Rick, Abigail did have a runaway, so, in a strict sense, was “clear”, but, you make it sound like a blowout, which it was definitely not. A minor point, but, whatever.

To me, Keegan looked like he was trying to be an actor. I thought Mustafa might have taken it, but ran out of juice.

Guys made a valiant rally, but too little, too late. Final category not one to my liking. I said Henry IV just to say something. Got only the middle DD. My Biblical knowledge is minimal, but that one was easy. Abigail the academic administrator reminded me of that terrible 1960s song, “Abigail Beecher, my history teacher” by Freddy Cannon.

The whole show was a struggle for me, but I did get the pro-fighter sport, but only after one wrong response. The oil system was kinda easy, so was QUITE SPRUCE anagram and the Pinocchio character in 6-7.

They didn’t seem to want to be bothered with that Pinocchio clue. It wasn’t going to make any difference at that point. They were deliberately avoiding the car DD, on the other hand.

Freddy Cannon really had some terrible song titles, like the high school teacher one you mentioned, Transistor Sister and Tallahassee Lassie. But he also had Palisades Park and Action (oh baby c’mon)!

      • Howard says:

Yeah, the 2 you mentioned were decent. I think I went to P Park once, in 1966, while working at a summer day camp. I know Tallahassee Lassie but not the other one. Someone once told me a nun who had a sex change is a trans-sister. 🙂

        • VJ says:

I went to Palisades Park in ’66, too. June or July, I think. The Wild Mouse was one scary roller coaster. It’s funny to think we might have been there on the same day!

  4. Rick says:

It was another splendid game, and Abigail won the game with a clear runaway. Wow! Anyways, I was average in the game, and missed the FJ. Well, that FJ was a tough one to be sure.
