Final Jeopardy: U.S. Place Names (4-13-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/13/2018) in the category “U.S. Place Names” was:

It’s the only state named for a woman & whose capital is also named for a woman

The last quarterfinal of the 2018 College Championship features: Univ. of PA. senior Patricia Jia, from Fremont, CA; Worcester Polytech sophomore Alli Ross, from Shrewsbury, MA; and Dartmouth senior Eric Thorpe, from Laguna Niguel, CA.

Round 1 Categories: The Greek System – Their Debut Albums – Snack Chat – The Oceans – Give It the Old College “Tri” – We Made That Thing

Eric found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Oceans” under the $600 clue, with 10 clues left after it. He was in second place with $2,600, $1,200 less than Alli’s lead. He bet $1,600 and thought it was the Indian Ocean. That was WRONG.

Alli finished in the lead with $6,600. Patricia was second with $3,200 and Eric was last at zero.

Round 2 Categories: 2008 – A Question of Film – Science Lab – Internal Rhyme Time – 5 Characters in Search of Their Authors – Aaron, Judge

Eric found the first Daily Double in “5 Characters” under the $1,200 clue, on the 17th pick. In second place with $10,400, only $200 behind Alli’s lead. He bet $1,400 and he was RIGHT.

Eric finished in the lead with $12,600. Alli was next with $11,400 and Patricia was in third place with $1,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MARYLAND?

Maryland was named after Queen Henrietta Maria, (known in England as Queen Mary) consort of King Charles I. Mary was the last child of France’s first Bourbon monarch, Henry VI and Marie de Medici, as well as the sister of the future Louis XIII. Her birth name (after her parents) was Henriette Marie.

Annapolis was originally named “Providence” and later “Anne Arundel’s Towne” to honor the wife of Cecil Calvert, 2nd Lord of Baltimore. In 1694, Sir Francis Nicholson, the Royal Governor, chose to name the capital Annapolis in honor of Princess Anne, who succeeded William and Mary to the English throne in 1702. Queen Anne chartered Annapolis as a city in 1708. Her royal badge is depicted on the Annapolis flag.

Sporcle Challenge: There are 25 capitals named after people on this quiz. I’m sure you know quite a few more than just Annapolis!

Patricia wrote down Wyoming. She bet and lost it all.

Alli got it right. She bet $8,201 bet, finishing with $19,601.

Eric went with Virginia. He lost $800, leaving him with $11,800. That gave Alli Ross the last semi-final spot and won Eric a Wild Card.

My thanks to Richard for putting the semi-finalists and Wild Cards in the comments all week. I will put up my list on the weekly recap.

What about Georgia and Atlanta which are both anachronistic names but for women??

    • VJ says:

@Marc Marc, they weren’t asking what states and capitals had female names. They wanted the ones named after women and in states, they are Maryland and Virginia (and W. VA indirectly). In state capitals, the only ones I know for sure are Annapolis and Augusta. (I’m not sorting out the Helena, Montana stories).

@John, sure you can change your first name to Lahaina if you want to possibly be the only man in the world named that 😀 Last year, 7 American girls were named Maui.

  2. Dalton Higbee says:

One of the semifinal games could be like this: Rebecca Rosenthal vs. Dhruv Gaur vs. Rishab Jain.

    • William Weyser says:

The 1 thing that I’m hoping for, even though I don’t work for JEOPARDY!, is that the producers don’t put 3 winners in the 1st game, 2 winners & 1 wildcard in the 2nd game, & 3 wildcards in the 3rd game, like they did last year & the year before.

  3. VJ says:

It was interesting that the last clue of Round 1 was about the Greek word that is also the ending of the right state capital.

Also interesting — the Empire State, its largest city and its capital were all named after Henrietta Maria’s son, James II.

Patricia doesn’t know mayday or SOS during an emergency situation at sea, seriously? Has she even watched any ship movies at all , VJ? I noticed that she couldn’t get much rhythm going either. But congrats to the semi-finalists. I am hoping one of them will win the big one

    • VJ says:

@Lou, That DD was the first clue that got picked in the category and she may have thought it required more than a one-word response.

By the way, for Alex Trebek’s information, the SSA shows that 5 American girls were named Wyoming in 2016. In 1944, it was 5 and in 1923, 6. Those are the only public statistics they have on the name.

Cheyenne has been a Top 500 American girl’s name since the year 2000.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    Thank you for that.

  6. John B. says:

Speaking of clues: the DD miss “Mayday”, had Patrica gotten that she would have had 6K and a fighting chance, but not with “Wyoming” 🙂 The “Virginia” answer I suspected showed up ( probably thought of Alexandria and Charlottesville).
Alli’s bet was gutsy, given her score before FJ but it worked out. I guess she followed the stratagem of studying States (and probably Presidents) when being on J. Very confident, and it worked out for her.
Eric’s Virginia miss didn’t hurt him, he got the 4th WC due to a low bet.
I take it that players who are yet to compete are “sequestered” and are not told the results of the 1/4 finals already played and that the 5 games are taped back to back in 1 day?

    • Svoyager11 says:

Indeed, during q-final games (when wild cards are relevant) contestants are sequestered until after they have played. To do otherwise would be patently unfair to ‘early week’ players. Of course, this means Friday players don’t ‘see’ any shows but their own, but such is life.
