Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/29/2022) in the category “Gods & Goddesses” was:

10x champ Ray Lalonde, a scenic artist from Toronto, Ontario, has now won $285,100. In Game 11, his opponents are: Emily Kawaler, a bioinformatician from New York, NY; and Rachel Cohen, a consultant from Denver, CO.

Ray found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “3-Named Writers” under the $800 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,000, $2,800 more than Emily in second place. Ray made it a true Daily Double and came up with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. That was WRONG.

In his 1843 essay, “A Winter Walk”, he mentions “the wonderful purity of nature at this season” show

Emily finished in the lead with $5,200. Rachel was second with $4,600 and Ray was last with $1,200. All clues were shown.

Rachel found the first Daily Double in “State of the Heart” under the $1,200 clue on the 16th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $13,000, $5,000 more than Ray and Emily tied in second place. Rachel bet $4,000 and said a Brady heart rate. That was WRONG.

Maybe QB Tom doesn’t make some hearts flutter fast enough, as this condition is a resting rate of less than 60 beats per minute show

Emily got the last Daily Double in “The House of Power” under the $800 clue with 6 clues left after it. In third place with $9,600, she had $1,600 less than Ray’s lead. Emily bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS EOS or AURORA?

Eos was the Greek goddess of the dawn, whose Roman counterpart was Aurora. She was the sister of the sun god Helios (Sol) and the moon goddess Selene (Luna). They were the children of the Titans Hyperion and Theia. From Encyclopedia Mythica: “At the close of night she rose…and on a chariot drawn by the swift horses Lampus and Phaethon she ascended up to heaven from the river Oceanus, to announce the coming light of the sun to the gods as well as to mortals.”

Sporcle Quiz: Match up 16 Greek gods and goddesses with their Roman counterparts.

Rachel got it right with Eos. She bet $11,000 and finished with $22,800.

Ray had Eos, too. He bet it all and doubled his score to $26,400.

Emily had the other sister, Luna (or Selene), the moon goddess. She lost her $12,201 bet and finished with $1,999. That made Ray Lalonde the winner with an 11-day total of $311,500.

I knew there was something else I wanted to remark on in this game — that triple stumper that ended with “& feel free to Bill & Ted up your response”. It’s an example of the writers getting too cute.

It would have been a lot better if it read “2 of its 3 letters are vowels, it’s a state of misery, usually followed by “is me” or “unto you”

Wow. I had the exact opposite impression of Emily as everyone else. She annoyed the hell out of me. Every single time she didn’t ring in first, she seemed to curse her clicker in feigned affront that implied it was somehow fixed. After a while, I almost wondered if she was simply trying to ring in no matter what, as it almost seemed she surprised herself when she actually got the question, sometimes correctly thinking quickly, other times obviously having no clue. Either way, her untimed and timely demise came on a question that anyone who’s ever done a crossword puzzle would have known. I’m glad the old guy continues (and how the hell does he know all those modern music references?).

Emily would have won by $1 if she had been correct in final jeopardy.

My goodness, but didn’t Rachel’s abruptness bug me. She reminded me of someone I can see in my mind’s eye, but whose name I don’t recall. It’s that interruptory, pushing thing. Maybe it stood out because Ray is so much more relaxed or metered.

I got FJ wrong. What is the most minor galling thing is that I had 4 years of Latin in high school!

Funny, I had a completely different reaction, Jason. I actually told Nikki out loud that I liked Rachel’s voice and I hope she wins. I don’t mean to take anything away from Emily. Both ladies played very well!

I was sad Emily missed FJ. I second-guessed my Eos response with the same response Emily had. It’s also funny that I switched from Eos/Greek to Luna/Roman. I should have remembered that Greek name from a clue about selenophobia from an old Daily Double. The contestant’s hilarious wrong answer was “fear of Mexican music stars.”

      • Jason says:

It wasn’t the timbre of her voice. It was just the clipped, interrupting thing. What’s weird is she wasn’t weird in her interview.

Best game in I don’t know how long. Those sharp women came out like a house afire, fell back a bit, then charged forward like champion thoroughbreds down the stretch. I could tell Emily didn’t know FJ and that Ray wrote down his response quickly. I thought Ray might be toast after he missed that early, easy DD, but he had plenty of time to recover. If they do another 2nd chance tournament, Rachel gets my vote.

  6. Lou says:

Ray played an incredible game today and I hope he can tie with Seth Wilson and Austin Rogers tomorrow

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

I was hoping we would have a new champion today but it didn’t work out. Congrats to Ray on becoming an 11 day champ. He will wrap up the year tomorrow for his 12th game.
