Final Jeopardy: Business (12-14-23)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/14/2023) in the category “Business” was:

Of the big 4 U.S. Airlines, the 4 that each have over 15% of the domestic market, it’s the youngest

Today we’ll see the last Champions Wild Card (Hearts) semifinal and it features these three champs: Garrett Marcotte, a software engineer from Boulder, CO; Yungsheng Wang, a deputy public defender originally from Lafayette, LA; and Andrew Chaikin, a musician & teacher from San Francisco, CA.

Round 1 Categories: In the Footsteps of History – Tennis-y Williams – Literature – State of the College – It’s All Relative – A Proverbial Mess

Garrett found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “In the Footsteps of History” under the $600 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He was the only one on the board with $1,800. Garrett made it a true Daily Double and tried Minuteman Trail. That was WRONG.

Starting at the Boston Common and ending at the Bunker Hill Monument is this two-word path show

Yungsheng finished in the lead with $5,400. Garrett was in second place with $2,400. Andrew was last with $2,000. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Brownian Notions – Scenes from an Italian Restaurant – The Sea’s Bounty – A Matter of “Life” or “Death” – Hell – High Water

Andrew found the first Daily Double in “Hell” under the $1,200 clue on the 8th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $7,600, $600 more than Yungsheng in second place. Andrew bet it all and he was RIGHT.

2 clues later, Andrew got the last Daily Double in “Brownian Notions” under the $2,000 clue. He was in the lead with $15,200 now, $8,200 more than Yungsheng in second place. Andrew bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

Andrew finished in the lead with $26,600. Yungsheng was in second place with $18,600. Garrett was last with $4,800. All clues were shown.

ONLY ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SOUTHWEST AIRLINES?

According to the latest data on Statista.com, the top 4 U.S. airlines by domestic market share are:

American Airlines, 17.5%
Delta Air Lines, 17.3%
Southwest Airlines 16.9%
United Airlines 15.6%

The order changes when you want to know oldest to youngest, but stays the same whether you go by founded (first year shown) or commenced operations (second year shown).

Delta Air Lines – 1925 / 1929
United Airlines – 4.6.1926 / 1931
American Airlines – 4.15.1926 / 1936
Southwest Airlines – 1967 / 1971

Garrett thought it was Delta. He bet and lost his whole $4,800.

Yungsheng got it right. He bet it all and doubled his score to $37,200.

Andrew thought it was Delta, too. That cost him $10,601 and left him with $15,999. So, once again (as he did in his quarterfinal), Yungsheng came from second place to claim the victory. It’s gonna be Yungsheng Wang, Tyler Vandenberg and Gary Hollis in the two final matches, the first of which takes place tomorrow.

Happy to see Yungsheng win again. I strongly guessed at SouthWest. For a moment, I asked myself, “Maybe Alaska?” But, I stood my ground.

I’m happy to see the big DD wagers. After all, it IS “Win or go home”!

Holy tailfin, I cannot believe all 3 did not get that cinch FJ. SWA is the new kid in town compared to AA, UAL and Delta. And I don’t fly very often. (But I suppose Alaska coulda been a contender for the answer.)

Props to Andrew for those massive DD wagers and correct responses. I falsely thought they were Chaos and Helen Gurley Brown. (She was Cosmopolitan, I think)

A bit surprised he missed the 2-word path in Boston (DD). Very famous. Also slightly jarred that no one knew the locations of the Johnstown flood, Wayne State or Weber State Universities. And the life or death alter ego of bread. And those proverbs were insultingly simple.

This was a really exciting game to watch. Can’t wait to see what happens in the finals.

It sure was. After Andrew made those bold moves and was successful, it sure seemed like that took the wind out of Garrett’s sails, but as soon as Yungsheng got the chance, he went after those $2K clues hammer and tongs.

Thanks to his resolve to go for it, Yungsheng didn’t have to be the only one right against a runaway. 😁

But the only sad news is that there will be no female contestants in the Finals game for the Hearts group only.
