Final Jeopardy: 20th Century America (11-6-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/6/2019) in the category “20th Century America” was:

In 1939, turned down by 2 local theaters, Howard University was able to get an outdoor venue for this singer’s yearly concert

Quarterfinal No. 3 in the 2019 Tournament of Champions features James Holzhauer, 32x champ ($2,462,216); Alan Dunn, 5x champ ($120,802); and Lindsey Shultz, 4x champ ($101,002).

Round 1 Categories: It’s Not Australia – Tech Stuff – The Name of the Game – “All” In – The 2010s – Reality Show Breakouts

Lindsey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The 2010s” under the $800 clue on the 7th pick of the round. She was in second place with $1,800, $200 less than James in the lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

James finished in the lead with $8,800. Alan and Lindsey were tied in second place at $4,000.

Round 2 Categories: Science & Exploration – American World’s Fairs – That’s Entertainment! – Past Bedtime – Initials to Roman Numerals to Numbers III – This Time, It’s Personal

Alan found the first Daily Double in “Science & Exploration” under the $1,600 clue on the very first pick. The scores were the same as above. He bet it all and he was RIGHT.

In the early 1800s this German studied the ocean current of South America; one off South America’s west coast is named for him. show

James found the last Daily Double in “Initials to Roman Numerals to Numbers” under the $2,000 clue on the 12th pick. In the lead with $17,600, he had $12,000 more than Alan and Lindsey, who were tied at $5,600. He made it “a truly disappointing $1,109,” and he was RIGHT.

James finished in the lead with a runaway $30,309. Lindsey was next with $10,800 and Alan was in third place with $6,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MARIAN ANDERSON?

This comes from an April 2016 Newsweek article, reporting on the Treasury Department announcement that Marian Anderson will be on the $5 bill that is coming out in 2020: “In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to let Anderson sing at Constitution Hall, a controversy that made national headlines. First lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who belonged to the organization and resigned over the issue, helped coordinate an Easter Sunday performance for Anderson at the Lincoln Memorial, where 75,000 people came to hear her. She sang seven songs, including “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “Ave Maria.”

We just had a “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” Daily Double in the 10/23/19 game regarding Martin Luther King’s “March on Washington” speech. He is also going to be on the new $5 bill.

Alan wrote down “who is the one who sang at the L.M.” (Lincoln Memorial), to indicate he knew who the clue meant. That cost him $5,999 and left him with $1.00.

Lindsey got it right. Her $3,200 bet brought her up to $14,000. Her chance at a Wild Card looks pretty good.

James got it, too. He bet $326 and said “no shout out… following the rules.” He won the third semi-final spot with $30,635.

Final Jeopardy (11/8/2019) James Holzhauer, Alan Dunn, Lindsey Shultz

There were 2 triple stumpers in the IT’S NOT AUSTRALIA category that I feel sure the players would have known if they went top to bottom because they would have realized that all the answers begin with “A” by then. Could it have been a prank they pulled, knowing that James would go bottom to top?

($800) It’s in Transcaucasia, not Australasia, & its prime minister is named Pashinyan, not Morrison

($1000) It has an area of 180 square miles, not 3 million, & it has princes, not a queen

This is James’s 30th runaway game.

  2. Albert says:

I disliked what James did. When James got to $25,000 he should have stopped and just let the other two players buzz in. By stopping at $25,000 James could have allowed the other two to better qualify for a wildcard spot. That is just me, though. I am a nice, considerate person and that is what I would have done if I were in James’s position.

    • Laurent says:

Nice is not the name of the game, smart is. Why would James hold back and, possibly, allow his fellow contestants to better their money score positions, whereby giving either a chance of not only catching up but overcoming him, possibly, in Final Jeopardy?
      That’s just my take.

    • VJ says:

I agree with Laurent on this. I don’t think the opponents would really appreciate that behavior at all, with the possible exception of letting a player who is at zero get a crack at the last clue, like in yesterday’s game.

And I’m not saying that’s what the players did yesterday. I don’t know.

      • JP says:

Also, you can’t say he should have been nice and let them buzz in so they had a better chance at the wild card, because you could just as easily say he should have tried to keep their shoes as low as possible, because that would have let players from the other days have a better shot at the wild card. It’s a zero sum game. Helping the players he’s up against is hurting the players from other days.

Oh by the way- to the site master/founder of this website- thank you for what you do!!! 🙏🙏🙏 Absolutely awesome site, I’m on here every day there’s a new show!! Appreciate you!!

  4. James Kennedy says:

    No “Extra Clues” today??? 😭😭😭😭😭

    • VJ says:

@James, there were only 3 clues in the whole match that stumped the players. I put the 3rd one and the Roman Numerals category on page 2 of this post to save me some time. (I’m babysitting my 4-year-old grandkids)

      • James Kennedy says:

Oh you’re the best!! I’m sorry, I didn’t want to sound like I was complaining!! I love that feature (get to fake-impress the in laws 😂), and for some reason sometimes I have trouble finding it, and then I saw it in the write-up something about page 2 but I may have completely misunderstood 🙏

      • James Kennedy says:

And 4 year olds!? 😱😱 That sounds like a TON of work!!

      • VJ says:

Thanks James. No problem. Next time, I’ll make sure to mention it in the comments.

Re: The twins — they are pretty good for me. Believe it or not, they like to watch Popeye with me.

  5. Lou says:

Well today’s game was a lot better and James didn’t need the big daily double bets even if he gets to the finals. I just hope we get some big scores tomorrow from the remaining players. Also VJ aside from Martin Luther king and Anderson being on the five dollar bill, which other potential candidate can you think of that might also be on there?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, this is a done deal for the $5 bill — Marian Anderson, MLK and Eleanor Roosevelt are going to be depicted on the back of it per their connections to the Lincoln Memorial

    • Laurent says:

      Sally Ride, perhaps?

  6. JP says:

For the “Initials to Roman Numerals to Numbers” Daily Double, I figured the second initial was definitely ‘I’, and, not having read the book in about 20 years (and not having particularly cared for it), figured the most likely options for the first letter were C, D, or M. I guessed incorrectly. It seems like James didn’t have to guess.

    • VJ says:

I wonder if it would been harder if they asked for the actor who portrayed that character on the TV series

  7. Elan Xu says:

I hope James Holzhauer might make it to the finals game.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

The standings after Quarter Final No. 3 (11-6-19) are:

    Semifinalists:
    James Holzhauer: $30,635
    Dhruv Gaur: $20,001
    Gilbert Collins: $16,801

    Wild Cards:
    Kyle Jones: $16,800
    Lindsey Shultz: $14,000
    Rachel Lindgren: $13,601
    Anneke Garcia: $4,799

    $5,000 Winners:
    Rob Worman: $799
    Alan Dunn: $1

  9. Richard Corliss says:

    And then there were 13.
