WHAT IS WESTMINSTER ABBEY?

Per the Catholic Encyclopedia, an exiled Edward the Confessor vowed to make a pilgrimage to Rome if he regained his throne. Pope Leo IX released him from the vow in return for building an abbey to honor St. Peter. Edward began rebuilding St. Peter’s Monastery which became Westminster Abbey many years later. Edward died on 1/5/1066, and was buried in the Abbey just days after it was consecrated on 12/28/1065. (Edward, by the way, was not “the Confessor” at the time. He got that title when he was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1161.)

After Edward’s death, his brother-in-law, Harold Godwinson was crowned Harold II, which may or may not have happened at the Abbey. But there is no doubt that William the Conqueror, Harold’s successor, was crowned at the Abbey on Christmas Day 1066. Since then, all English and British monarchs have been crowned at Westminster, the 40th being King Charles III in May 2023. As for burials, space was in short supply after burying King George II in 1760. Subsequent monarchs have been interred at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Sofia bet $3,599 and finished with $7,199.

Joseph bet $806 and finished with $10,406.

Allegra $800 and won the game with $26,600. Allegra Kuney is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Usually, they’re pretty good at getting all three contestants to the same height. However, on this day, Allegra, I believe, is MUCH shorter than most. The footstool they put under her was too much, or, actually, Sofia was too low. In any case, I happened to see that.

Otherwise, a total dud show for me. 0/3 on DD and missed FJ. I first said St Paul’s, but then went to St Peter’s in Rome. My spouse, not a J! fan, just like the three, did get it correct.

I have to disagree with my friend Howard, as to the earwax clue. There is a best selling product in drug stores and supermarkets that is clue answer + “ex”, for chemical removal of that wax.

    • Howard says:

I have my earwax professionally removed every summer, so when I see the fancy name on the printout of the visit, that’s why I know its medical equivalent. If one doesn’t have to deal with such matters, I’d think they wouldn’t know the product’s name either. Like me before I had these procedures. Also, I see tons of drug commercials on TV and I swear I still don’t know what conditions they’re supposed to treat.

  2. Howard says:

Joseph hung in there, Sofia finished with a decent total, but they were no match for the winner. Super impressive. Oops–I said St. Paul’s for Final and didn’t think about it any longer. 11th century just slightly before my time.

Got only the first DD. In hindsight, I do remember the Ruby Bridges artwork. Guessed the royal pair’s wedding couple. Definitely knew the earwax clue, that was a toughie. And now I know that there are 3 living peoiple who don’t know what CPR stands for. Except for the $400 clue, those dictionary clues were tough.

  3. Travis says:

I guessed the right answer for final, was the only thing that came to me.
