WHAT IS MASSACHUSETTS?

On wikipedia’s most current list of U.S. cities by population, only 10 state capitals are also the most populous city in the state. (They are highlighted in green). Boston is the only New England capital out of those 10. The next most populous Massachusetts city on there is Worcester at No. 138. On the 1840 list, when there were only 26 states, all of the New England state capitals made the Top 100, except Montpelier, VT.

Rachel bet $3,601, finishing with $13,601.

Dhruv bet $6,401 and won the second Semi-Final spot with $20,001. Rachel has a shot at a Wild Card.

Thanks for the link to former state capitals. Always fascinated me. Few people know that Atlanta was not the capital of Georgia during the Civil War. In Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind”, I think she mentioned Milledgeville, but didn’t say it was the capital (or Macon either). On the other hand, she didn’t say Atlanta was the capital either. Can hardly wait for The Woodchopper to appear.

In his opening, Alex said that the contestants were wearing purple ribbons, a symbol in the fight against pancreatic cancer, in honor of Larry Martin, who passed away shortly after winning the 2018 Teachers Tournament. The show will be donating the minimum prize of $5,000 to the charity selected by Larry’s widow.

That was particularly poignant, considering that Alex is fighting that same battle right now.

Thanks for sharing. I never knew how Larry had died, or whether he’d been ill when he was on the show.

Rob Worman didn’t do so well in this match.

This is the first that I’ve seen Rob clearing the board despite missing the daily doubles. I do think Rachel might have what it takes to be in the semi finals. Rob had some difficulties getting into the rhythm today. More conservative bets could be used and I think the five time champs have more advantages over most six time champs. The double jeopardy round was more challenging.

  5. VJ says:

I thought Rachel was amazingly fast with the anagrams today. I wish she would have made a higher bet but maybe her score will hold. We’ll see.

On that “Good Earth” character, I read that book and saw the movie but I mainly remember the wife’s name from the time my mother tried to cheat at Scrabble with it. We played a version where proper nouns and names were allowed and she tried to sneak that one in, but I knew it was hyphenated. 🤣

On the “gown” and “dress” clue in the “Frock” category, that was a new one on me. Never heard that word used with “gown” for something you wear to bed.

I thought the Jeopardy Round Daily Double was very difficult. That’s the type of question that could come back to bite someone like James. In general, I think bets on bottom row clues should probably be more cautionary, especially in the ToC.

I bet we see more conservative bets from James tomorrow because of the wild card aspect.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

This is the first time Rob Worman cleared the board in 2 rounds of play. Dhruv uncovered 9 Daily Doubles, got 8 correct and 2 wrong.
