If one did a little searching, the answer itself was flawed as the correct response would have been Zaire.

    • Samuraidave says:

Sorry, that’s not correct. “Zaire” no longer exists. That country is now known as The Democratic Republic of the Congo

      • Rick says:

On the contrary, Zaire does in fact exist as that is what the inhabitants of that nation still call the country.

        • JP says:

First, “Zaire” couldn’t have been the correct answer as Zaire/DRC is not landlocked.

Second, that some people refer to something by a prior name does not mean that the thing, by that name, still exists. “Zaire” is not recognized as the official name of the DRC by anyone, I believe.

Finally, when it comes to the names of countries on Jeopardy, it’s assumed that clues about countries’ names reference their common shortened English names – if a clue asks about European countries that start with the letter ‘D’, Germany’s name in its own language being ‘Deutschland’ doesn’t mean it should be considered.

        • Rick says:

Yes, you’re right. Zaire is not landlocked as it has a 25 mile long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean so that settles that. During those thirty seconds of Final Jeopardy, Uganda immediately came to my mind as I was well aware that the country was situated on the equatorial line, and was landlocked as well.. However, during those last few seconds of Final Jeopardy, I recalled the nation of Zaire.. I mean, at the time, I thought that selecting Uganda couldn’t have been that easy.

Wow, big payday for Ryan! And the sole solver of a not-Friday-friendly FJ!

Strong players today but a costly mistake on final for one of our opponents. Not surprised that gabe picked Harper Lee on that daily double but there are other books like the Color Purple is also by the same author. I would have loved to see the opponents get this final but I hoped that geography was in our opponents’ wheelhouse.
