WHAT IS KEW GARDENS?
“Kew Gardens’ Imperial Connections”, an essay on Reynold News, talks about how Kew Gardens helped supply medicine to Britain’s imperial soldiers. The British government was spending some 53,000 pounds a year buying quinine from South America to cope with rampant malaria among its troops in India and elsewhere. The source for quinine was bark from the cinchona tree found only in South America. “Botanists trained at Kew were sent out to South America to obtain cinchona seeds which could subsequently be replanted in plantations in southern India. Despite some initial failures, the introduction of cinchona into India was a success. Quinine became available in India for less than a penny per packet.” This was a great boon to the British but it was a major loss of revenue for South American countries.
The quest for quinine is not mentioned on Kew Garden’s historical timeline, however, there’s other interesting stuff, like the connection to H.M.S. Bounty.
Mattea had no response and bet nothing, to finish with $7,200.
Eric drew a blank, too. That cost him $217 and left him with $16,783.
Andrew made it unanimous. He lost $1,337, winning the last semifinal spot with $37,863. So, the lineup in the finals will be Andrew He ($37,863) vs. Sam Buttrey ($33,601) vs. Amy Schneider ($19,664), if they go by semifinal scores
2 triple stumpers from the last round:

As I’ve made known, I am not a fan of the Canadian person. However, I found it a bit remarkable that the two other contestants were able to consistently beat her to the buzzer.
The comment about Andrew’s gutsy move reminded me of something from military school. It’s rather crass, but, the school was still all male when I was there. Anyways, “there’s a fine line between balls and stupidity”. But, also, “it ain’t braggin’ if it’s true”.
So, good on him! As stated, he might be the one to beat in the finals!
Here’s another old saying “Lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place”. I screamed “Nooooo, don’t do it” when Andrew bet it all on that last DD. Then he got that easy clue and all was well. Nevertheless, I will be most surprised if he gets all the DDs in any of the final games and is able to duplicate that good fortune.
Although, lightning does strike twice (or more) – the Empire State Building is struck at least 100 times per year. What I give Andrew is taking advantage of situations where they present.
I do look forward to the “best of seven” (or, at least, “first to three”)!
Yes, I know the saying isn’t literally true. Personally; I believe in lucky times when things just go your way. It could be for a day or more. And the opposite can happen too, when nothing goes right. That sure was Andrew’s lucky day in getting all the DDs and knowing them too.
I think Andrew He will win the TOC. Steve Martin is extremely good, but somewhat limited. Amy will have to be more aggressive with the DD wagers to keep up with Andrew, if Amy can even get to the DDs before Andrew.
Who’d have thought that both Matt & Mattea would fall by the wayside? DDs often make the difference in matches, especially among the elite players. Andrew’s 3rd DD wager was ballsy, to say the least. He’s fortunate it was a softball. The first 2 were a bit more challenging, but gettable; I figured that if I knew them, he would too.
Killer FJ. Didn’t help at all that Kew Gardens was the next neighborhood over in the area of Queens (NYC) where I grew up.
Ugh!!!!! What were the writers thinking? I mean, in the Spanish category, the correct Spanish phrase for ‘Don’t bite your tongue’ is ‘No te muerdas la lengua’. Actually, what was there instead was: ‘No tener pelos en la lengua’. Andrew obviously made something out of it, and good for him.
Regarding the FJ, I’m not sure of the timeline when that transfer even took place regarding the Kew Gardens. Perhaps it was during the Victorian era? In fact, I couldn’t find anything where it was ever mentioned that the Kew Gardens was involved in that transfer in any way. I mean, with only a few seconds to spare before the clock ran out, I gasped and came up with the Victoria estate.
And then there were 3.
Congrats to Andrew winning the semifinals game! This was a great match between eric, Andrew and Mattea. Good luck to Andrew in the finals!
And we end the week with a triple stumper as today’s Final was not nice to anybody.
Wow what a gusty Daily Double bet by Andrew in the DJ! Both DDs were TDDs. I think that $16,800 is the record for the most money True Daily Double ever in Jeopardy history! That has never happened before. Now Andrew gets to have a rematch against Amy Schneider. The last time they met was when Amy defeated Andrew in his 6th game when she was the only player to get FJ! and that was when she began her 40 game streak. This is gonna be the most exciting finals ever. The first player to win three matches will be crowned the 2022 TOC champion.
Roger Craig bet 9K then 18K on back to back TDDs in his TOC iirc
Yes, cause that’s how Roger rolls 🤣
