WHAT IS THE UV INDEX?

The UV Index was first developed by Canadian scientists in 1992. The goal was to educate the public on the damage the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation does to human skin. Per accuweather.com, “methods of calculating and reporting a UV index varied across the globe. In order to replace the inconsistencies…a worldwide UV index was later developed, and today it’s standardized by the World Health Organization.” You can check the UV Index in your own area on there. Fill in your location and click on “more details” under the temperature shown. I tried it and just about everything from ‘real feel’ temps in sun and shade to the UV Index in Houston this morning is about the same as it is in Havana, Cuba!

Regarding that 43.3 record, it was set in 2003 atop a volcano in the Bolivian Andes when “a perfect storm of of ozone-destroying chemicals sent cancer-causing UV-B radiation soaring.” Planetary scientist Nathalie Cabrol said that a UV index of 43 is more akin to surface radiation on Mars than on Earth.

Slade came up with cloud level. He lost $3,200 and finished with $2,000.

Claudine wrote down “lifelong dream” and crossed it off her list with a little check marked box next to it. Losing her $4,300 bet dropped her down to $1,500.

TJ was going for greenhouse cap, only getting so far as the “ca.” He lost a mere $200 and won the game with $16,600. TJ’s 4-day total is $76,524 from 4 runaway games.

RE: The clue A BLAST FROM THE PAST ($1000) At the 1585 Siege of Antwerp…
a better reference is: THE SIEGE OF ANTWERP (DUKE ALEXANDER FARNESE)

    • VJ says:

André, that may have good information about the siege, but the title doesn’t give the response the clue was looking for (the attackers who built the bridge that got blown up)

Something wrong with the second Daily Double question.

  3. VJ says:

Ii got the skull finder too. I also got the holy roman emperor and Netherlands attackers. Didn’t get the funny lady.

  4. Howard says:

3/3 on DDs, including that tricky middle one. Did well in 2nd round overall but Final eluded me completely. Only stumpers that went my way were the Black mitzvah funny lady and the skull discoverer.

OK challengers tonight but no match for TJ.
