Final Jeopardy: French Novel Title Heroes (11-19-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/19/2015) in the category “French Novel Title Heroes” was:

He “looked as if he had been shut up for a long time in a tomb and… been unable to recover the… complexion of the living.”

The first final game of the 2015 Tournament of Champions features Kerry Greene vs. Alex Jacob vs. Matt Jackson. The players will bring whatever they win today into the last match of the ToC tomorrow.

Round 1: Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Recent Best Sellers” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. He was in the lead with $5,000, $4,400 more than Matt in second place. He bet it all and took an educated guess that was RIGHT.

Alex finished in the lead with $12,400. Matt was second with $4,000 and Kerry was last with $200 in the red.

Round 2: Alex found the first Daily Double in “‘North’ and ‘South’ America” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $15,200, $11,200 more than Matt in second place. He bet it all again and he was RIGHT.

Matt found the last Daily Double in “The Tutors” under the $1,600 clue. He was now in second place with $5,600, $21,200 less than the mind-boggling lead held by Alex. He bet $5,000 and he was RIGHT.

Around 343 B.C. he was summoned by Philip II to be tutor to his son. show

Alex finished in the lead with $29,600. Matt was next with $14,600 and Kerry was in third place with $8,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS “THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO”?

This observation takes place when the Baron Franz d’Epinay meets Edmond Dantès. Dumas provides a description of Dantès as a strikingly handsome man between 38-40, except for that living dead thing. Here is the original French:

“Seulement cette pâleur était étrange on eût dit un homme enfermé depuis longtemps dans un tombeau et qui n eût pas pu reprendre la carnation des vivants.”

There are many translations of that passage. This one is online here. “His pallor was so peculiar, that it seemed to pertain to one who had been long entombed, and who was incapable of resuming the healthy glow and hue of life.”

Kerry thought it was “The Man in the Iron Mask.” She lost her $4,800 bet and finished with $3,400.

Matt had the same response. He lost $11,600 and wound up with $3,000.

Alex went with his usual no-answer shtick. This time he had “good game, guys.” (Yeah, for you. LOL). He bet nothing and remained at $29,600.

FJ Results: 11-19-15

So Matt and Kerry kind of need a miracle tomorrow. But let’s not forget that even if they can’t get one, there’s a $50K difference between the second and third place prizes so they still have to give it the best shot they can.

    38/61 here.

Was that really an Azalea in the photo?

  4. Robert Anderson says:

It’s not right that so much of winning hinges on buzzer technique.

    Great recap.

Know what though? How on earth did you get this up so fast? I thought FJ was Monte Cristo but I Googled it to be sure and I found this website. I watch the show at 7:30pm Eastern Time. What about you?

  6. JEOPARDY says:

Alex one of the most annoying jeopardy contestant in history.

  7. JEOPARDY says:

simple fj for those who read a whole lot.

One maybe two should get it. Hasn’t aired here.

I think Alex knew the answer to his first Daily Double all along and just pretended not to, waiting until the last minute to answer and shaking his head dejectedly. He’s done this too many times for it to be believable anymore. I get that poker players bluff, but what’s the point? To mess with his opponents’ heads? To annoy the viewers? (If so, it’s working.)

I got final jeopardy right, only because this was the only french book I owned. Lucky guess. hahah

The ratings for Jeopardy will go through the roof tomorrow.

It’s unusual to have 2 contestants who graduated from the same university in the TOC finals. Alex and Matt are making Yale proud.

  11. VJ says:

@Cece, you were right! Maybe he should go into business and sell Alex Jacob Toilet Paper Rollers. A lot of people who want to go on the show are probably already using the one they’ve got for practice but they would totes want an official Alex Jacob one for luck. They would bring it to the show. LOL! .

    • jacob ska says:

@VJ, oh no! No bringing toilet paper rolls to the show! I still haven’t recovered from Jennifer and those drumsticks she brought to the show.

    • Cece says:

@ VJ, Holy crap! I missed the game tonight (just as well it turned out). My bf said there were quite a few ts’s. I’ll have to wait until the game is up on JBoard.

Now all Alex needs tomorrow is the crown and the check—it’s a wrap.

  12. Eric S says:

Absolutely superlative game theory by Alex. With each All-in, he knew that he could come back if needed. It was the perfect risk vs. return scenario execution .
Now, he is very aware that all he needs to do is stay within 13,000 (ish) of the lead. It is likely then that he will want a low-scoring game. Thus, he may hunt DDs and bet very little when he can ($5), unless he REALLY likes the category (in which he may try to put the tournament away right there).
I feel like Alex is putting on a clinic in Game Theory: the kind from which Roger Craig was only a couple of correct responses away (against possibly the two best players ever).

    • Eric S says:

If he is with 13,000 tomorrow, he may win without answering a FJ correctly in the whole tournament (he missed the first one, which he didn’t even need to answer: lol, maybe that’s why he doesn’t answer any more).

    • Eric S says:

I will seriously man-crush if he gets a category he likes, goes all-in, nails it and drops his clicker all 8-mile Eminem

    • jacob ska says:

You got that right. He is definitely putting on a clinic. Alex made big money as a young Poker player. Now we see why.

  13. jacob ska says:

    Wow! Go Alex!!

    Keep it going Matt!!!!!!!
