Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/5/2023) in the category “Global Geology” was:

WHAT IS ICELAND?

Icelandic car rental places came up first in my google search on this clue. Blue Car Rental’s blog says: “Iceland sits on the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It is the only place in the world where you can see those two tectonic plates and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge above ground.” Then they have photos and info on the best places to visit to see the plates with your own eyes.

Amanda went with Norway. She bet and lost her whole $11,000.

Joe got it right. He bet $10,000, bringing him up to $22,800.

Brendan thought it was Mongolia. He lost $9,801, dropping his score down to $5,999, so Joe Feldmann advances to the semi-finals.

My favorite category tonight was “Numbers 4 letters.” Apparently Amanda liked it too. Joe definitely knew his Geology. His pen was down before Ken finished reading the fj clue. Fantastic.

This was a pretty good group, and congrats to Amanda and Joe for their strong finishes to prevent what appeared to be a runaway.

I was clueless on FJ….until I thought of a country with a small population in between N America and Europe. The mind works in mysterious and useful ways sometimes.

First and 3rd DDs very gettable; middle one tripped me up. Kept thinking of the Home Office in England.

This old-school Broadway buff knew the composer of “How to Succeed” (but I saw only the movie). The 3.89 grams that rhymes with “damn” wasn’t hard. I remembered the CIS all too well when the IOC made them an Olympic team.

I first thought of Iceland for FJ, but then changed it to Greenland. Oh well.

I also wanted to add this tidbit about the population: 3 islands are listed on World-O-Meter with populations between 350K & 400K: Iceland is the only independent country. Martinique and Guadeloupe are overseas departments of France. (Worldometer)
