Final Jeopardy: Places in the News (10-22-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/22/2018) in the category “Places in the News” was:

In a hint of the future, in 1973 Marjorie Post gave it to the U.S. Govt. As a warm-weather presidential retreat, but it was returned

New champ Erik Agard, a puzzlemaker from Gaithersburg, MD, won $25,201 last Fri, while defeating 5x champ Alan Dunn. In his second game, he is up against: Mike Jenkins, an environmental consultant from Ewing, NJ; and Joanna Rom, a docent from Washington, D.C.

During the chat, Alex Trebek told Erik how vexed he was by a crossword puzzle in the L.A. Times that Erik co-created with Tracy Bennett. As a result, Alex thought that throwing a cream pie in Erik’s face would make him feel better. Thankfully, he did not do it.

WHAT IS MAR-A-LAGO?

Smithsonian Magazine has an article about how “The woman who built Mar-a-Lago in the 1920s and presided over it for almost half a century, Marjorie Merriweather Post, had gone to great lengths to turn the mansion into an official wintertime presidential retreat.” It tells you why it didn’t work out and notes the irony of the property eventually becoming the winter retreat of President Donald Trump, its current owner.

An old clue on Marjorie Post: HIGH SOCIETY ($400) The Palm Beach estate Mar-a-Lago was the home of this cereal heiress. — They also asked for her middle name once. They’ve never had a clue on her actress daughter, Dina Merrill.

Mike crossed out something starting with M but had nothing else so he lost his $1,100 bet. He finished with $100.

Joanna got it right. She bet $66, bringing her up to $3,600.

Erik wrote down “what is you doing baby?” After deciphering that, Alex said, “Well, I’m responding incorrectly.” Erik lost $1,000, winning the game with $14,800. His 2-day total is $40,001.

Mike hasn’t rung in throughout in the Double Jeopardy! round.

  2. Angel says:

    How old is Erik

  3. rhonda says:

VJ, do you think Erik’s answer of “Brown v. Board” should have been accepted? I don’t think it was a complete response.

    • Albert says:

Yes. It was a complete response because I have heard the case referred to in the past as ‘Brown v. Board’.

    • VJ says:

I was surprised at that myself but then Trebek gave the answer to the triple stumper in that category as “Citizens United” and not “Citizens United vs. FEC” and I said “okay, whatever”

      • Albert says:

I think just the words “Citizens United” would have been accepted because whenever the case is talked about on the news only the words “Citizens United” are ever used. I never hear any of the political talking heads say “Citizens United v. FEC”, ever.

I actually came up with the correct response for this questions and the only thing I could remember was simply “Citizens United”. Nobody ever mentions “v. FEC”

    • Thomas Boyce says:

I believe “Education” was mentioned in the clue

      • VJ says:

@Thomas, it wasn’t — ($800) Thurgood Marshall argued this 1954 landmark Supreme Court case on school segregation

  4. Albert says:

This was a weak group tonight. How did the guy in the middle even pass the Jeopardy test?

  5. John B./I. says:

Congrats to Erik. Just when you think players can’t do any worse, they do. A total of 18.500 AFTER FJ speaks for itself, as do the 20.600 before FJ. 15.800 being a runaway by 9.400!! I’m wondering if Erik will win 5 games, then be replaced by another 5 game winner etc until they get rid of all the 3 game winners for the ToC? In that case even Alex Schmidt and Kyle Becker (4 each) might have to worry. We’ll see.
And Marbury v is pretty much the most important SCOTUS decision, establishing that the government can’t to anything illegal and/or violate the law. It established that the constitution WAS law.
I’m curious to see later on why the scores were so low.

  6. John Christian Ambion says:

Well, we are off to a World Series week with a runaway game, ended with a very funny Final Jeopardy! response on this.

  8. Lou says:

A good start by Erik, though Joanna and Mike both couldn’t catch up to him since she was the only person that got final right. I thought Erik knew about Marbury vs Madison supreme court case, VJ. I believe you might have heard of Miranda vs Arizona, plessy vs Ferguson and so forth right? At this rate, Erik might surpass buzzy Cohen but we will see how he does for this week. And I thought Mike was going to put Mar A Lago and if he was right he still wouldn’t win the game.

    • VJ says:

What the heck makes you think that, Lou? I think if this one was between Erik and Alex Schmidt, Erik would have lost!! Same for Buzzy. There were a lot of triple stumpers today.
