WHAT IS STURGEON?

From Phys.org: “Sturgeon, affectionately referred to as “Tsar Fish” are perhaps more critically endangered than any other group of species on the planet. There are 27 species in all, of which four are found in the Volga: Russian sturgeon, sterlet, stellate, and the beluga which is famous for producing the world’s finest caviar…. But socioeconomic change in Russia has been disastrous for these fish. Their rivers have been polluted, fragmented and dammed and this – along with overfishing and poaching for caviar – has caused populations in the Volga to plummet by 90% since 1970.”

In 2013, 5 countries bordering the Caspian Sea (Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan) officially implemented a 5-year moratorium on commercial fishing for sturgeon, which was extended through 2019. In recent news, Russia and Iran have formally agreed to continue the ban.

Julie didn’t have a response. She lost her $6,000 bet and finished with $4,800.

Bill got it right. He bet $8,410, bringing him up to $21,610.

Kevin got it, too. He bet $11,201 and won the game with $26,401. His 2-day total is $49,401.

Sorry I should have said “when Alex ruled Bill wrong when Bill didn’t add a ‘y’ “

    • VJ says:

Bill did add the “Y” out loud after Alex ruled against him. As I said, I don’t know for sure — I mean, I’m sure I’ve seen other times where a player actually gave the answer without phrasing it in a question and the others were allowed to ring in

  2. Gayle says:

Why wasn’t Kevin allowed to ring in on that ‘su’ clue when Alex ruled him wrong when he didn’t add a ‘y’?

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

@VJ, are there any FJ! with clues less than 30 characters? I do believe that none of these have made a Triple Solve.

  4. Lou says:

Well a brilliant play today by all the players although I do wish kevin had hit the remaining daily doubles. Congrats to him on his second win. VJ do you know if any of your relatives ever caught a sturgeon before at a local lake or fishing pond? A very interesting final jeopardy today on fish.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, as far as I know, I never met anyone who caught a sturgeon, or if they did, they didn’t tell me about it .

  5. VJ says:

I liked the first round category names today.

LINK: 10 more clues from the game

The $1,000 clue in THIS IS “SU” was not a triple stumper per se. What happened was Julie gave an answer without buzzing in but it was wrong because she left off the Y. Bill buzzed in and gave the same answer, leaving off the Y, too. He then realized that and added the Y but Alex didn’t allow him to change his answer.

    • rhonda says:

And we had another mention of my relatives in the Part-Time Writers category!

      • VJ says:

Didn’t that happen another time, Rhonda, when there was a rash of rabbit clues in a short period of time? I think it was last year

    • Heidi says:

In Round 1 they always let the contestant correct their own answer if It’s done before the buzzer sounds. Not fair for Bill. Same with his response What Is Levi?, which Alex ruled wrong even tho he answered in the form of a question. I was hopping mad and will not watch for a few days.

      • Anne says:

I was wondering about that too. I thought they always allowed you to make a correction if it was before the buzzer.

      • VJ says:

Well, Alex did say no when Bill first said just “sulk” but they were talking at the same time. If Alex says no, then you can’t change it supposedly, but I remember one time from last year when something similar happened and the change was allowed. It’s discussed in the comments here. Frustrating!
