Final Jeopardy: The Postcolonial World (10-18-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/18/2019) in the category “The Postcolonial World” was:

This African nation left the British Commonwealth in 2003 over sanctions on its undemocratic government; in 2018 it applied to rejoin

New champ Daryn Firicano, a clinical representative from Las Vegas, NV, won $18,200 yesterday. In Game 2, his challengers are: Brian Lynch, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, CA; and Amanda Borowski, an editor from Winter Springs, FL.

Amanda found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Enabling Cookies” under the $800 clue on the 5th pick of the round. She was in second place with $600, $800 less than Brian’s lead. She bet $400 and she was RIGHT.

Round 2 Categories: This Side of Parodies – Newspapers – The Reign of King Charles II – Biology – Best Picture Oscar Winners – Words in Icelandic

Amanda found the first Daily Double in “Best Picture Oscar Winners” under the $1,200 clue on the 10th pick. She was in the lead with $11,200 now, $5,600 more than Daryn in second place. She bet $4,000 and guessed “Selma”. That was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ZIMBABWE?

Back in 2003, Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe pulled the country out of the Commonwealth in a sort of “you’re suspended/I quit” thing. Mugabe was ousted from power in a November 2017 military coup and Emmerson Mnangagwa became president. When Mnangagwa applied for readmission in 2018, the Commonwealth took the position that the country “must demonstrate that it complies with the fundamental values set out in the Commonwealth Charter, including democracy and rule of law plus protection of human rights such as freedom of expression.” It’s been a rocky road, according to some reports, but this recent September 2019 article in the Zimbabwe Herald claims progress is being made

From 1988: FOOD $200: At Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, hotels offer not only cocktails, but crocktails made from meat of this animal

Amanda thought it was a somewhat illegible Eswatini. That cost her everything but $2.

Brian just had “Congo” without specifying which country he meant. He lost $10,000, leaving him with $2,400.

Daryn came up with South Africa. He lost $10,601 but still won the game with the $3,599 he had left. Daryn’s 2-day total is $21,799.

Final Jeopardy (10/18/2019) Daryn Firicano, Brian Lynch, Amanda Borowski

Reversal: ENABLING COOKIES ($1000) These Girl Scouts cookies are known as the “Cradle of Polynesia” – Alex thought Amanda said “SamoaNs.” Daryn got it with a clearer “Samoas.” The judges ruled that Amanda said it right the first time and she got her $$ back.

A triple stumper from each round:

I caught only the tail end of Final Jeopardy, but the wagers made no sense, other than the champion’s. He had to bet $10601 to keep Brian at bay if both were correct. Brian could win only if Daryn answered incorrectly. In order to lock out Amanda’s potential $20K total, he should have bet $7601. Without knowing how much the other two would bet, Amanda could have taken the easy route and bet $0. In my scenario, Daryn would have $3599, Brian $4799. Amanda could have won with $10000. Even if she’d bet $5200, she’d have won either using my numbers or the ones that actually occurred.

Yesterday, a Triple Solve. Today, a Triple Stumper. I would’ve said Ghana, but that was wrong, anyway.

Amanda got $2,000 back on the reversal.

We can’t just get rid of the clues in 2 rounds of play to complete the Jeopardy! round or Double Jeopardy! so that’s 2 weeks in a row.

I don’t understand why Amanda bet anything. You’re not going to win if the other two get FJ right. So just stay put and hope for the best. Simple logic, yet again and again you see it defying contestants.

I guess African geography isn’t really in the contestants’ ballparks. Only one triple solve this week and the opponents took a big risk yet it didn’t pay off for them. I am thinking Brian must have been.thinking of the democratic republic of Congo. Is that what you were referring to VJ? Well I hope that daryn can redeem himself next week because this one was a stinky clue.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are 2 different countries. That’s what I was referring to — he didn’t name one of them specifically

@Lou And not only that, but also politics as well. You know, Africa is pretty notorious when it comes to postcolonial world, especially since the 1960s.

Today’s $3,599 on October 18, 2019 is slightly better than the $2,000 won six years ago on this very same date in 2013.

I remember that 1. After Stuart Anderson missed, and wagered everything, which was the only good wager of that episode, Nolan Martch also missed, and wagered $5,600, which is what Samantha should have wagered, and was left with $2,000. Then, Samantha Nataro also missed, and as we all know, nobody knew that Shirley Johnson, I hope I’m right on the name, was having ”Fun, Fun, Fun!”, until her daddy took the Ford Thunderbird away. Anyways, instead of wagering $5,600, Samantha wagered $7,601, and heartbreakingly lost to Nolan by $1, making him the new JEOPARDY! Champion, and would be back the following Monday, which he lost. Speaking of ”6 Years Ago On This Very Date”, yesterday, all 3 players got Final Jeopardy! right, and the next day, the pendulum just had to swing the other way, with all 3 players missing Final Jeopardy!. GEEZ!

      • Dal Higbee says:

Also, on October 18, 2011, there were co-champions, who both won and tied with $1,599, with the returning champ Lanny Timan becoming a two-day champion with $17,600.
