WHAT IS THE MEKONG RIVER?
“According to the original creator of the current Lao flag, Maha Sila Viravong, the white disk in the center symbolizes the unity of the Lao people (and the future reunification of the two Laotian regions of Laos and Northeastern Thailand that are divided by the Mekong River) under one nation. It is also said to represent a full moon against the Mekong River. The red stripes stand for the blood shed by the Lao people on both banks of the Mekong River… and the blue symbolizes the Mekong River itself, a symbol of the nation’s prosperity.” (Wikipedia: Flag of Laos)
Scarlett had the Ganges River. That cost her $7,000. She finished with $400.
Michelle thought it was the Yangtze. She lost her $5,000 bet, bringing her down to $10,600.
Manny got it right. He added $1,199 bringing him up to $17,199 and making him the new Jeopardy! champ.

The Mekong river is well-known to flow through Vietnam; since Laos is next to Vietnam, this seemed the most logical answer if one were guessing. I think Scarlett gave an impression of being a quieter Austin that may have been misleading; her success at running the Dolly Parton category that was a large part of her win may have been indeed due to the luck of getting a category so closely associated with her own state and thus familiar to her in a way that evaded Austin.
Hi Barb, idk if her state had a lot to do with it. She just buzzed in faster than Austin. This is what Austin said on Twitter about it: “I love LOVE LOVE Dolly Parton, and Scarlett just CRUSHED me on the buzzer. Good on her! SWEEEEEPP!”
btw, I’m not from Tennessee and I swept that category too. I’ve been a fan of Dolly’s since her first TV series in the 70s, even before she became a megastar (and probably before Austin and Scarlett were born!). Dolly usually closed the show with “I Will Always Love You.”
@VJ, you are so correct about Dolly Parton. I ran that category too. I’m a huge fan & watched her sing that song on her show long before the late Whitney Houston sang it. Dolly wrote that song & still owns the rights to it. Smart songwriter & singer. I love her big time. Yes my better half knows. lol
LOL, Jacob. Do you remember all the cracks and jokes they used to make about Dolly when she first came on the scene? Bette Midler, too. They sure showed ’em. Very talented ladies.
Jeez, what happen to Scarlett tonight? Dalton is right, the curse of the giant killer strikes again. So, back to a champ-a-day, or so.
Yeah, right? “Sometimes you’re hot, sometimes you’re not” lol, but at least she had an excellent payday yesterday so, to paraphrase another slogan, “no tears”
Every time when a contestant picks the daily double at the beginning of the Jeopardy! round and Double Jeopardy! round, I say this “Right off the bat!”.
No player, after defeating a 10+ time champ, has ever won more than one game.
Agreed this is similar to margie eulner otts second game and she lost miserably. But today Scarlett is not worried at all so still I will give her credit for trying though. Let’s see if the naval officer can win a streak next week.
The yangzte river is in China and that country is nowhere near laos. But still Scarlett played valiantly today. Also the Mekong is close to the Vietnam country right VJ? The people in Vietnam are somehow related to the laos people based.on their ethnicity if I’m not mistaken. Although this game is similar to margie ott s first game where she completely lost focus.
@Lou, Laos is one of the 14 countries that border China, but the Yangtze only flows through China. More of the Mekong River flows through China than Vietnam actually. Check out this article that has a map of the river’s course.
