Final Jeopardy: Bodies of Water (3-17-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/17/2014), in the category “Bodies of Water” was:

More than 1/5 of all the world’s people live in countries bordering this, the world’s biggest bay.

New champ Thad McCollum won Friday’s game with $2,400. Yes, it was one of those times when nobody got the final. He’s hoping to do better today and these two players are hoping to do better than him: Gordon Graham, from Victoria, BC, CA; and Jen Cosgrove, from West Hartford, CT.

Round 1: Jen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Biography Subjects” under the $600 clue before the first break. She was in a tie for the lead with Gordon. They both had $400, $200 more than Thad. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

The 2,000-Year-Old Man category featuring Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks was hilarious and we’re guessing that Jeopardy! will put a clip of it on its youtube channel. So check that out if you didn’t get to see the game (and if they don’t we’ll get a clip and put it on the FJ recap at the end of the week).

Thad finished in the lead with $6,800. Jen was second with $5,200 and Gordon was last with $2,600.

Round 2: Gordon found the first Daily Double in “Let’s Play Bridge” under the $800 clue. He was in third place with $5,400, $6,600 behind Thad’s lead. He bet it all and he was RIGHT.

Jen found the last Daily Double in “A Bird in the Hand” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $13,200, she had $1,200 less than Thad’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Jen finished in the lead with $15,200. Gordon was next with $14,400 and Thad was in third place with $12,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right, right in line with our prediction for a change.

WHAT IS THE BAY OF BENGAL?

“NEARLY one in four people on earth live in the countries that border the Bay of Bengal. The region is strategically vital to Asia’s rising powers. Its low-lying littoral — including coastal regions of eastern India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Sumatra — is home to over half a billion people who are now acutely vulnerable to rising sea levels…” (New York Times Op-Ed)

From 2008: BODIES OF WATER ($1200) India, Bangladesh & Burma border this bay of the Indian Ocean

Thad bet $12,000 and finished with $24,400.

Gordon bet it all. He finished with $28,800.

Jen only bet $10,000 so she ended up in second place with $25,200.

So Gordon Graham won the game and he will be returning tomorrow. Just think, Jen could have bet to tie like Arthur Chu. Tsk, tsk. But she got to take $2,000 home while Thad ended up with $3,400 for his 2 appearances.

Gordon wins due to inoptimal wagering from the leader. I suspect Gordon’s wager was inoptimal, too.

i think gordon did what he had to do. jen’s bet was obviously based on a lack of confidence and it cost her the game. basically you have to presume the second placed is going to bet everything. as was the case (again) today.
i was a little surprised that all 3 got it.
