WHAT IS CIRCUS?

Etymology Online notes that the Latin word “circus” was “from or cognate with Greek kirkos.” The Romans applied the term to “circular arenas for performances and contests and oval courses for racing (especially the Circus Maximus).” As you can see in the above video, the Circus Maximus wasn’t circular at all, but had an elliptical shape.

Etymology Online also gives other senses of circus, including the “Big Top” kind we usually associate the word with, and the “circular road” types described in London’s Many Circuses

Gregg wrote down “ampitheater”, (making us glad it wasn’t amphitheater). He lost $1,699 and finished with $1.00.

George thought it was arena. He lost $6,199 and finished with $3,401.

Amy also went with arena. She lost $7,000 but won the game with the remaining $20,400. Amy’s 25-day total is $918,000.

Initially my thought was what is arena? But I quickly changed to what is circus maximus? though I was only about 80% confident.

I had no trouble getting Swanson.

In fact, I think Tucker Carlson is related to the Swanson family.

Tough final as we got our first triple stumper of the year.

I remember hearing about the circus maximus and even the Latin phrase helped me with this clue. Although it has been a while since I went to see a circus event. Not so tough of a final but arena was close enough. Amplitheater I don’t think so unless you are in a globe theater in London where william Shakespeare made plays.

      Nobody went with your gut?

Well, I was quite surprised that Amy didn’t get this FJ! although I did anticipate at least one “arena” response early this morning.

If you look at pictures online, Lou, the Globe Theater is actually more circular than the Circus Maximus. An amphitheater is described as semi-circular, but even so, some of those images show full circles and even the half ones are more circular than the Circus Maximus.

VJ, I too was surprised Amy didn’t get the fj clue as well as George. With their backgrounds in quantitative areas (for George Yale & Wharton) I thought this clue would be a slam dunk. That a ring is a circle led me to circus. But I’m a weird thinker anyway. LOL.

Speaking of slam dunk I already liked Amy but I like her even more knowing she’s a Warriors fan. Steph Curry is my current favorite NBA player. Go Amy!
