Robert found the last Daily Double in “Book of the Year” under the $800 clue. After it, there were only 4 clues left in the top row and 2 in the second. In second place with $12,600, Robert had $1,400 less than Jonathan’s lead. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT (and in the lead).

Here’s what I was able to glean about the Carretera Transistmica (“Trans-isthmian Highway”) from the preview of Ashley Carse’s “Beyond the Big Ditch” (2014) on google books: The 1936 Trans-isthmian Highway Convention was ratified in 1939, setting in motion long-discussed plans to build a highway across the Panamanian isthmus. It was announced in April 1942 that the trip from the Atlantic to the Pacific could be made “on modern concrete highways” in 2 hours. The road was formally dedicated on 4/13/1943 as the Boyd-Roosevelt Highway. Whether that was in honor of American President Teddy Roosevelt and Panamanian President Federico Boyd, (presidents when the Canal was built), or FDR and Augusto Samuel Boyd, (presidents when the highway was built), I don’t know. This Panama Canal Who Was Who doesn’t even mention the Panamanian president.

Success, I think — I found an archived article from the Encyclopedia of History and Culture of the Caribbean on Augusto Samuel Boyd that says he “also signed the agreement for the construction of the Transístmica highway, important artery that connects the cities of Colon and Panama, which received the name of Boyd-Roosevelt by Law No. 116 of 1943, in honor of Augusto Samuel Boyd and Franklyn Delano Roosevelt.” (Translated by Google: I do not speak Spanish).
btw, it also says he was the son of Federico, so here are 2 relatives of the first two, working together decades later.

Yup, that’s what I found as well, I just don’t remember the site anymore. I also asked Edgardo, my friend from Panama and he said it was named after the son of Boyd sr. and FDR, not Teddy, since both (Augusto Boyd) and FDR were presidents of their respective countries when the highway was inaugurated. Wish I could speak all the languages in the world for instance. Well, everybody has his crazy notions….why should I be an exception? LOL

I’m sure there are several across the English speaking world, but they not necessarily have famous highways running parallel them. Besides, a “waterway” usually refers to a man made thing, like the Erie canal etc.Robert probably just misread the clue or drew a blank. Who knows? In a lot of cultures they just give a river the nickname “mystic” I’m sure.I wonder how many rivers or creeks are called “mystic” by just the native Indians in America?
And with that BIG payday, Scott McFadden is officially OUT OF CONTENTION for the ToC. The clue here, “Carretera Transistmica”, must have been very helpful. Chelsea got to the wrong part of the world and lost nothing, while Robert got to a trap and lost something. Jonathan made it big and ALMOST doubling his score.
Well looks like this week ended on a high note with Jonathan adding himself into the list of the toc with the other four time winners. Congrats to him but he needs another win or two if he wants to get to where Alan Dunn or Rob worman are right now.

Well, here we go again. First of all congratulations to Jonathan. He is now #11 overall on the ToC list between Dave and Alex. Since Jonathan and Robert were that close: NICE PAYDAY! Jonathan:wide range of knowledge, can draw inferences, has obviously at least some knowledge of Spanish (translated it is “over the isthmus highway”). Bravo!
