Final Jeopardy: French Towns (1-31-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/31/2020) in the category “French Towns” was:

Legend says local farm wife Marie Harel & a priest from Brie created the famous product of this Normandy village

New champ Michelle Paul, a managing director from Newark, DE, won $17,900 yesterday. In Game 2, she is up against: Matthew Leonard, a client services coordinator from New Haven, CT; and Audrey Koh, professional taste tester from Oakland, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Symbols – % (percentage) – @ (at) – “&” (and) – * (footnote) – > (greater than)

(Only the symbols were shown on the board which seemed a little off-putting for the players. I know I would have said “asterisk” for “footnote”)

Matthew found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “@” under the $600 clue on the 14th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,800, $800 less than Michelle’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and guessed the Bay of Portugal. That was WRONG.

This waterway extends 51 miles from Limon Bay to a second bay whose name would kinda give it away. show

Michelle finished in the lead with $4,800. Audrey was second with $3,400 and Matthew was last with $1,600.

Round 2 Categories: Species Names – 14-letter Words – Literary Festivals – Historic Pleas – World Transportation – Real-life Celebrity Superheroes

Audrey found the first Daily Double in “Historic Pleas” under the $1,200 clue on the 8th pick. She was in second place with $5,800 now, $200 less than Michelle’s lead. She bet $4,000 and very seriously said: “Can I change my wager?” That was a “no.” Her time ran out before she could respond so she was WRONG.

Chief Joseph met Teddy Roosevelt & pleaded with him to allow this tribe to return to its ancestral home. show

Michelle found the last Daily Double in “Species Names” under the $1,600 clue on the 16th pick. In the lead with $7,200, she had $6,000 more than Matthew in second place. She bet $2,200 and she was RIGHT.

Pandalus borealis, the deepwater prawn, is also known as this directional shrimp. show

Michelle finished in the lead with a runaway $10,200. Matthew was next with $3,200. Audrey was out of the game at negative $2,600.

Only ONE of 2 contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS CAMEMBERT?

From Sheridan’s Cheesemongers: “The legend of Marie Harel, the inventor of Camembert, is possibly the best known of all the French cheese myths. The story goes that a priest, to whom she gave shelter during the Revolution, gave her the recipe for Camembert as a token of his gratitude. However the first recorded mentions of Camembert-style cheese in the region occur over 100 years prior to this. For a thorough debunking of the myth of Marie Harel… consult Pierre Boisard’s ‘Camembert: A National Myth’.”

They also tell you that Camembert cheese smells like “cabbage and mould.”

Matthew wrote down the same thing I said when I saw the clue this morning– “cheese.” He bet and lost it all.

Michelle got it right. She bet $2,022 bet and won the game with $12,222. Her 2-day total is $30,122.

Final Jeopardy (1/31/2020) Michelle Paul, Matthew Leonard, Audrey Koh

A triple stumper from each round:

LITERARY FESTIVALS ($1200) Each year the Western Folklife Center in Elko, Nevada hosts the national gathering for poetry named for this rustic job

($1600) Louisville’s GonzoFest is not about Muppets; it celebrates the writing of this native son

I’m trying to find the question/answer tonight that was about poets diminishing stars – something like that. Did anyone catch it? Can’t remember category or round.

    • VJ says:

@LL, it was in the first round in the * (footnote) category:

($400) A footnote in Richard Feynman’s Caltech lectures scolds these versifiers who say science reduces the stars’ beauty

  2. Anne says:

I couldn’t tell if Audrey was joking when she asked if she could change her bet. Maybe. It was funny though.

    • VJ says:

Hi, Anne, I couldn’t tell either, but if she was, her deadpan expression was terrific.

Alex Trebek has a great deadpan expression sometimes when he makes a joke, too, but still, there’s a twinkle in his eye 🤣

    • Albert says:

It was a joke. The joke would have been even funnier if she asked whether she could move to Wheel of Fortune 😁😁😁.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

I smell something. It smells like… BLUE CHEESE!!!!

  4. Lou says:

This game didn’t give Michelle much of a chance to nail other daily doubles. Audrey is dismissed and the second contestant eliminated early since Rachel Lin from 2016 and Priscilla Drobes. Congrats to Michelle on her second win. So we wrapped up this week with a couple of double solves and o be triple stumper. If my memory serves me correctly, this reminded me of seth Wilson’s second game, VJ where one of his opponents had a tough time with the daily doubles. Is camembert cheese still sold in supermarket today?

    • VJ says:

I don’t know, Lou. My tastes in cheese are very simple and I don’t think I’d want to try a sample of cheese that smells like cabbage even if they were handing them out free at the supermarket.

What was up with that cruise line clue? — “operated by a company with a “C” name” — leading me to say Cunard and then the answer is two words with the initials R.C. 🙄

  5. Richard Corliss says:

This game had its ups and downs. Darn those Daily Doubles. That was a costly miss for Audrey. But this was really Michelle’s game she just took it away from her & Matthew.

    • Howard says:

Intentionally or not, Michelle allowed the other two to self-destruct while answering a fair share of the questions. Those of us in the Pacific NW are more familiar with Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe than most others would be. But WAY too many stumpers tonight, once again. I managed to know 5 of them.

      • VJ says:

Hi Howard. I knew a bunch of them today. My sports knowledge is pretty skimpy but I knew James Harden thanks to Mark’s basketball posts and Papa John’s specials in Houston when his team wins 🙂

I didn’t count Mayan city landmark — I know it from prior J! clues but I would never ring in on it for fear of mispronouncing it and losing $$

Could not believe nobody got the adjective for the space probe on the rebound!!
