WHAT IS “LA VIE EN ROSE”?

In 2007, Marion Cotillard gave an Oscar-winning performance as iconic French singer and songwriter, Edith Piaf, in “La Vie en Rose”, the U.S. title for the film known in France as “La môme”.

Edith Piaf was born Edith Gassion in 1915. As a teen, she sang on the streets of Paris to support herself. At age 20, she became the protegée of nightclub owner Louis Leplée. He dubbed Edith “la môme piaf”. La môme means “kid”, most likely a reference to her diminutive 4’8″ height. “Piaf” means sparrow, an obvious nod to her beautiful voice. Edith later began using Piaf as her surname. In the mid-1940s, Piaf wrote and recorded “La Vie en Rose”. It made her an international star and became her signature song.

Dee came up with “La Fille” (the girl). She didn’t lose a sou, standing pat on $6,600.

Troy took a shot at it with “Hugo” from 2011. He bet and lost it all.

Jake started to write something but scribbled it out. He lost $5,003 and won the game with $22,797. Jake DeArruda is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Without the critical word “biopic,” I would not have known FJ. I was leaning toward Hugo before realizing that was not a biopic. Didn’t hurt that I saw the Piaf film long ago.

The horn bet clue was a toughie, but I’ve dealt craps for both real and play money since 1980, so that one was a pushover.

Troy played a solid game despite not getting a crack at the DDs. Jake was fast and smart, but probably will get roasted in social media for his odd mannerisms.

    • Jason says:

It’s remarkable how much of the same dirt we tread, Howard. I have a transitional job in a casino, now. I don’t deal dice, just blackjack, but, I’m around enough to get the horn clue.

And, you said, much more diplomatically than me, what I was thinking of Jake’s performance. The cameraman was moving all over the place to keep him in scene. Then, he leaned on the podium like, who was it, Tyler Rhode, who later showed the worst sportsmanship I think I’ve ever seen. It was in one of the tournaments, in an earlier round, where he lost, and put his head down on the podium for the entirety of the post game.

I don’t know if Jake has what it takes. The DD, as said, was instrumental, and you can’t count on them, routinely.

      I didn’t get FJ correct.

I’m at a friend’s house & they don’t have a local, OTA antenna. We found a YouTube that quit before Double Jeopardy was over (about 19 minutes in) Boo! Isn’t there someplace we can stream the show? Thank you for this recap site.

  3. Janice Graves says:

Are questions ask of contestants prior to selection to appear on Jeopardy to determine their strongest area of knowledge? During recents shows new contestants are given categories that they immediately answer the entire categories, therefore taking over the reigning champion.

    • VJ says:

Janice, it’s not a matter of contestants acing categories because the other players are weaker in that topic. It’s whoever is quickest on the buzzer.

Jake overtook Troy today with that $10K bet on his Daily Double, not because he ran the Country Songs category. Troy still did a great job of preventing Jake from having a runaway so at least he had a chance to win.

    • Albert says:

The game boards are prepared well in advance of the tapings.

  4. Rick says:

I missed Jeopardy tonight because a golf game was in that spot. Oh well. C’est la vie.

  5. William Weyser says:

We’ll see Troy Meyer in the Tournament of Champions.

  6. Ismael Gomez says:

And we end the week with a triple stumper as today’s final was a tough one.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

After some easy FJs this week, we are ending the week with a tough FJ! clue that stumped all three players but it is not a bad week at all.
