WHAT IS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY?

When the Statute of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, Cuban patriot, freedom fighter and poet José Martí was living in exile in New York City. The next day, he wrote an essay that was published in La Nación in Buenos Aires on New Year’s Day 1887. Here is the full part that today’s clue was taken from:

“And all these luckless Irishmen, Poles, Italians, Bohemians, Germans, redeemed from oppression or misery, hail the monument to Liberty because they feel that through it they themselves are uplifted and restored. Behold how they run toward the wharves from which the statue can be seen, elated as shipwrecked people who descry a hopeful sail.” (José Martí Reader, Google Books)

    Does Anneke look like Velma from Scooby Doo?

  2. Richard Corliss says:

    We have 7 players who were out after Double Jeopardy!.

  3. Albert says:

    Didn’t the guy look a lot like Ethan Hawke?

    I’m glad the guy lost. He thought he was soooo cool, but he really came off like a tool.

  4. Rhys says:

    I am really confused. For some reason, the 7:30 on channel 4 is a repeat. Why aren’t they showing the new one?

    • Vicki says:

      Me too 🙁 Boston

        @Rhys @Vicki
        Same thing happened yesterday in several states. They showed THURSDAY’S show – so the next day – and the FJ of WEDNESDAY. Some screw up by a network I guess?

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

    Dave became 2019’s first DISMISSAL, Jessica doubled up, and Anneke wagered big by a margin of $1, and she is the new Jeopardy! champion. I bet she won’t make it past 4 or 5.

    • William Weyser says:

      Similar to Jonathan Dinerstein, I was hoping that Jessica Holloway would make it to 5 or more wins, but if a tough clue gets in the way, or if we get an easy clue, and everybody gets it right, but the champion is not leading, and the challenger wagers to beat them by $1 if they double up, then, it’s not gonna work out, and what are we supposed to do?

  6. Lou says:

    Well I wasn’t expecting a two player final jeopardy today but glad both players got it. Sorry Dave, but even though you did your best, the ladies were dominant. Although I thought Jessica would have won this one but we will see what anneke can do. By the way VJ and John how often do you guys see contestants who are behind and still participated in the final round? We’ve had so much of them being dismissed since September 2018.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      As far as I know, if you enter FJ with “zero” or less, you don’t get to play FJ since you have nothing to wager. If negative is what you mean with “behind”. If you still have 1 buck and no chance (well, you don’t know, both # 1 and # 2 could wager everything and be wrong and you win with 1 or 2 bucks….) you get to play. I have seen a player (I think he was in the Armed Forces) once win with 1 buck. All that has to happen is that #1 and #2 are tied, wager everything and are wrong.

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, well, it might seem like there were a lot since this season began, but there actually were only 6 times before today: Sept 1, Oct 0, Nov 3, Dec 2. (That’s what I came up with looking at the monthly posts with the scores before FJ.)

  7. John B./I. says:

    Well, what do you know and here we go again. No string, though Jessica was very promising. Jonathan also did not make it to 5.
    This must have been one of the easiest FJs ever… even if you don’t know who Jose Marti was.They might as well have Eiffel and “gift by the French” into the clue.

    CONGRATULATIONS to ANNEKE !! Maybe she will….????
