Beat Shazam Recap: September 7, 2017

All right! We had to wait an extra week for the 13th episode of Beat Shazam (9/7/2017). Jamie Foxx was in good spirits and DJ October Gonzalez was in denim. Here are the three new teams are on hand, ready to battle it out for that million dollar chance. There were only 4 songs in each round this time around.

Here are the teams with the nicknames we gave them.

  • Z Twins: Zech and Zeph, from the Windy City, who began rapping at the tender age of 9
  • Gilmore Girls: Donna and Avery, a mother and daughter from San Antoinio, Texas. Actually, Jamie gave them that name.
  • Chattanooga Chums: Chelsea and Garrell, from Tennessee, have been best friends since high school

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING.
The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – 2010s
First 3 are worth $1000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $2000.
1. “Sexy and I Know It” (LMFAO)

Everyone got it right but the ladies in the middle scooped up the first $1,000

Of the 2 teams that got it right, Chattanooga was quicker than Z Twins.
3. “Somebody That I Used to Know” (Gotye Ft. Kimbra)
Z Twins $1000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $1000
Everyone got this, naturally, but Z Twins made bank and now, a tie must be broken.
4. (Fast Track) “On the Floor” (Jennifer Lopez)
Z Twins $1000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $3000
Chattanooga takes a giant step to lead by $2K.

Round 2: Animated Films – First time for this category
First 3: $2000 each. Fast Track: $4000
1. “Let It Go” (Idina Menzel) “Frozen” (2013)

Everyone got it but the leading team increased their lead.
2. “All Star” (Smash Mouth) “Shrek” (2001)
Z Twins $1000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $7000
Looks like the Chattanooga Chums are in their wheelhouse right now.
3. “Beauty and the Beast” (Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson) “Beauty and the Beast” (2017)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $7000
Z Twins were the only ones who got this! The others went for the fool’s gold, as Jamie would say, with “Tale as old as time.” It’s never the first words you hear!
4. (Fast Track) “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (Elton John) “The Lion King” (1994)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $11,000
The Chattanooga Chums came in at 1.74 to Z Twins’ 3.95.

Round 3: Johns – Another first– artists that have John in their name
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Third place goes home at end of round.
1. “Your Body is a Wonderland” (John Mayer)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $1000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
Wow! Chelsea and Garrell came in under 2 seconds. Intimidating!
2. “Love Me Now” (John Legend)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $4000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
The drought is over. The Gilmore Girls bounced into second place with the only right answer.
3. “Instant Karma (We All Shine One)” (John Lennon)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $7000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
The Gilmore Girls strike again.
4. (Fast Track) “Physical” (Olivia Newton-John)
Z Twins $3000 Gilmore Girls $13,000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
Amazing catch-up for the Gilmore Girls.

So it’s goodbye to Z Twins, but they will always be able to tell the tale of how their names inspired Jamie Foxx to recite every single book of the Bible.

Round 4: Rock
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000
1. “Rock and Roll All Night” (Kiss)
Gilmore Girls $13,000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
No one got it!
2. “Fly Away” (Lenny Kravitz)
Gilmore Girls $13,000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
Another bust!
3. “Use Somebody” (King of Leon)
Gilmore Girls $18,000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
Everyone got it but the Gilmore Girls had the flick of the wrist
4. (Fast Track) “Glycerine” (Bush)
Gilmore Girls $18,000 Chattanooga Chums $14,000
The teams were sadly out of their element for the better part of this round. They both locked in “Easier on You” on this one.

A $4K lead ain’t much when the songs are worth BIG MONEY. On to Round 5.

Round 5: Motown
First 3: $10,000 Fast Track: $20,000. Second place goes home with half their money.
1. “Baby Love” (The Supremes)
Gilmore Girls $18,000 Chattanooga Chums $24,000
Both got it right. That’s promising but the ten G’s went to Chattanooga
2. “Sir Duke” (Stevie Wonder)
Gilmore Girls $18,000 Chattanooga Chums $34,000
Chattanooga locked in the only right answer.
3. “Never Can Say Goodbye” (Jackson 5)
Gilmore Girls $28,000 Chattanooga Chums $34,000
The Gilmore Girls had the only right title.
4. (Fast Track) “I Can’t Get Next to You” (The Temptations)
Gilmore Girls $48,000 Chattanooga Chums $34,000
The Gilmore Girls had the only right title again. Only this time, it won them the game.

Chelsea and Garrell had to head on back to Chattanooga and we hope Garrell’s momma let him in. They got to keep $17,000 and that’s not bad at all.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at the million if they get all 5 right. There are no more multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Divas: “She Works Hard for the Money” (Donna Summer) – Shazam beat them and you know what that means.
2. ’80s: “Mr. Roboto” (Styx) – They buzzed in but didn’t know it.
3. Classic Rock: “Paint It Black” (The Rolling Stones) – Well, they’ve still got two more chances to add to their bank…
4. Slow Jams: “Oh, Girl” (Chi-Lites) – They knew it but just couldn’t get it in time
5. Hip Hop: “Money Maker” (Ludacris ft. Pharrell) – That one they got wrong so they finished with the same $48,000 they started with.

Now they had to decide if they wanted a shot at doubling that to $96,000. If they don’t beat Shazam, they will only get half, or $24,000. The Final Category was Pop. We wouldn’t be feeling too confident at this point. Donna strongly believed her daughter could nail a song in the Pop category, but she pointed out that $24,000 would go a long way in debt reduction, so they chose to take the $48,000 home. They proceeded with the “just for fun” last round. Avery buzzed in just to get a shot at the title but she couldn’t come up with it. So it was a wise move to take the $48,000. Here is “Counting Stars,” a 2013 hit for OneRepublic.

This was an emotional episode, especially for Jamie Foxx, when he learned that Donna and her family adopted a child from Haiti after the 2010 earthquake that devastated the tiny Caribbean nation. He revealed that he was adopted himself and had to walk offstage for a few seconds to collect himself after talking about how his adoptive grandmother nurtured him. There was also a commercial spot with Jamie during one break where he mentioned how emotional it got on this episode because helping those in need is what it’s all about. He invited everyone to tune in on Tuesday, September 12th, 2017 for the Hand in Hand benefit for hurricane relief. It will be broadcast on all major networks.
