Beat Shazam Recap: July 22, 2019

Here’s a recap of the July 22nd, 2019 episode of Beat Shazam, featuring host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne Marie. This week, Jamie said to be great at this game you have to know all types of music: “from Carly Simon to Cardi, from Train to Gucci Mane.”

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Andrew & Drew, a father & son from Dallas in the Lone Star State (TX)
  • Emily & Kyle, husband & wife from the Big Apple (NYC)
  • Byron & Phindi, BFFs from Brooklyn (BRK)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle

Another one for TX at 1.40 to NYC’s 1.98. BRK had “Saving All My Lovin”
5. FAST TRACK – HIP HOP: “I Wish” (Skee-Lo)
TX $6000 NYC $0 BRK $4000
Only BRK had the right title this time

Byron & Phindi (BRK) got a much needed cash infusion on the Fast Track and they are now only $2K behind Andrew & Drew (TX). Emily & Kyle (NYC) have some catching up to do in the next round.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to the 2000s and only one to the ’70s.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” (The Darkness)
TX $6000 NYC $0 BRK $7000
Everyone got it right but BRK took the money at 2.42, giving them a $1,000 lead over TX
2. “Unwell” (Matchbox Twenty)
TX $9000 NYC $0 BRK $7000
TX took that lead right back with the only correct title.
3. “Right Round” (Flo Rida)
TX $9000 NYC $3000 BRK $7000
Only NYC got the right title this time, putting them on the board for the first time.
4. FAST TRACK: “Circus” (Britney Spears)
TX $15,000 NYC $3000 BRK $7,000
TX and NYC had the right song. TX won it at 1.34 vs. 2.28.

So that was the end of the road for Emily & Kyle (NYC). At least they got a shot at staying in the game. Andrew & Drew (TX) have an $8,000 lead over Byron & Phindi (BRK), but let’s see what happens in the next round.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: Dance Hits
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “100% Pure Love” (Crystal Waters)
TX $15,000 BRK $12,000
BRK had this one all by themselves
2. “Feel So Close” (Calvin Harris)
TX $15,000 BRK $12,000
Both teams struck out
3. “Wild Thing” (Tone-Loc)
TX $20,000 BRK $12,000
Only TX got that one. BRK went with the other one “Funky Cold Medina.” Well? They do sound alike!
4. FAST TRACK: “Don’t You Worry Child” (Swedish House Mafia Ft. John Martin)
TX $30,000 BRK $12,000
Both teams were right but TX was on it in less than 2 seconds

Andrew & Drew (TX) ended this round with an $18,000 lead over Byron & Phindi (NYC). Things can change quickly in the next round with 50 grand up for grabs. HOWEVER… this round is really tough so if you do well in it consistently, you should definitely try out for the show!

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong” (The Spin Doctors)
TX $40,000 BRK $12,000
TX had the only right response
2. “Sir Duke” (Stevie Wonder)
TX $40,000 BRK $22,000
BRK got this one at a super super speedy 1.27 to TX’s 1.38 (super speedy)
3. The Impression That I Get” (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones)
TX $40,000 BRK $22,000
Both teams were off the mark. TX had “The Rascal King” and BRK had “Knock on Wood”
4. FAST TRACK: “Rock’n Me” (The Steve Miller Band)
TX $40,000 BRK $22,000
Everyone had “The Joker”!

So Andrew & Drew (TX) won the right to go on to the last round to take on Shazam, while Byron & Phindi were heading home with half their bank. $11,000 certainly made it worth their while.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. Chart Toppers: “Knock Three Times” (Dawn) – Daddy Drew hit the buzzer for this one – $65,000
2. Today’s Hits: “Castle on the Hill” (Ed Sheeran) – Oops! Andrew knew the singer but the title eluded him
3. R&B: “Band of Gold” (Freda Payne) – They couldn’t come up with that 1970 one hit wonder
4. Katy Perry: “Part of Me” – Drew thought it was “The One That Got Away.” Well, that wasn’t it but that’s what happened with it
5. Love Songs: “Dreamlover” (Mariah Carey) – Drew gave it a shot with “One Time” though we’re not sure if that was after the time ran out or not. They began the round with $40,000 and finished with $65,000.

Andrew and Drew can’t play for the million but they can still take a shot at doubling their money. They can play one more song against Shazam. If they are right, they will win $130,000. If they play Shazam and lose, it will cost them half their money and they will be going home with $32,500. As always, Jamie gave them the category to help them decide: ’80s. Drew felt great about the category. What he didn’t feel great about was the possibility of messing up one word in the title, like “a” or “the” so they decided to walk. They played the last song for fun and, as it turned out, Drew’s fears were well-founded. He said “Hungry Like a Wolf” for this Duran Duran hit song, but the title is “Hungry Like the Wolf”

The lesson in that is pay attention to your instincts. Drew’s were right on and, as a result, he and Andrew got to take home everything they won. Congrats!
