African Flags and Capitals

Here is a video that shows the capital cities of African countries and their flags (we looked up the leaders, too). There are also lots of jingles and even a rap song on youtube for learning the African capitals.

There’s a much longer video (about 17 mins) that just shows a map and Barnaby Lenon draws the countries in with little bits of information about the different regions. For example, he mentions that Monrovia, Liberia was named after the 4th president of the USA, James Monroe. This is cool, too.

You can memorize a list of countries and capitals without that much effort, but what good is that knowledge if you don’t really know where it is on a map, what countries are its neighbors and stuff like that? You see that on the quiz show Jeopardy! from time to time. The players know capital cities but they have no real knowledge of world geography. Even champs have been known to get tripped up by the clues.
