WHAT ARE QUEENSBERRY RULES?

From the International Boxing Hall of Fame: “Although his association with boxing was rather tangential, John Sholto Douglas, the Marquess of Queensberry, gained lasting fame when he sponsored the rules compiled by his friend John Graham Chambers. Douglas became acquainted with Chambers at Magdalene College at Cambridge and in 1867, he agreed to lend the new rules his name and patronage.” The Queensberry Rules were in the news a few years ago when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor announced that their 8/26/2017 boxing match would be fought under those rules.

The Marquess of Queensberry is also known for his role in Oscar Wilde’s ruination.

Vinny was going for rugby but he only got as far as “rug.” He lost his $2,801 bet and finished with $3,399.

Gauravi wrote down “the Doug Rules.” That cost her $9,801 and left her with $1,999.

Natalie got in “Douglas” with an apostrophe after the s. She lost $12,000 and finished with $800. That made Vinny Byju the new Jeopardy! champ. Congrats, Vinny!

I think many men in their 50s and older on the show would have answered the Final correctly.

    • Howard says:

That was an EXTREMELY tough final. I knew it because I’m 69 and a sports junkie.
Although I’m not so sure too many of my peers would have known it.

Fun to have $9K in triple stumpers including the face value of missed DD’s and a correct FJ! and be able to win the game from the fourth podium

  3. Ismael Gomez says:

Tough Final Jeopardy as nobody knows about boxing.

  4. Lou says:

I heard of Floyd Mayweather but I am not quite familiar with the Queensberry rules. I know not a lot of people watch boxing but what were you going for as your response to this final, VJ? Rugby has nothing to do with boxing. Gauravi should have stayed with her original amount and not bet anything at all. And what is the Doug rules?

    • VJ says:

I knew the answer, Lou. I used to follow boxing years ago. (I wrote an article on boxing nicknames on here a while back.) I pretty much lost interest in it after the Sugar Ray Leonard / Roberto Duran “No Mas” fight.

The Doug Rules was just a wrong answer.

Are you aware that contestants make their wagers before they see the clue, and that they can’t change their wagers after seeing the clue?
