WHAT IS STUART?

Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie and The Young Pretender) and Henry Benedict Stuart were the sons of James Francis Edward Stuart (The Old Pretender). Their grandfather was James II of England (and James VII of Scotland), who was deposed in 1688 in The Glorious Revolution. The ensuing Jacobite movement, which ultimately failed, sought to restore the House of Stuart. Henry Benedict Stuart was a Roman Catholic cardinal and although he did call himself Henry IX for a while, unlike his brother, he did not actively pursue his claim to the throne. (The names are linked to more information about them.)

From 2007: 1807 ($2000) In July, Jacobitism ended with the death of Henry Benedict, the last claimant of this royal family to the British throne

Karen thought it was York. She bet and lost it all.

Lindsey went with Tudor. She lost $10,995, leaving her $5.00.

Jonathan got it right. He bet $9,001 and won the game with $22,001. Jonathan Lindeen is the new Jeopardy! champ.

    They might see Lindsey again in about a month and a half for the upcoming Tournament of Champions.

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

    I didn’t manage to watch the full episode. Anyway, in the immortal words of @William Weyser and Spongebob Squarepants, after Lindsey Schultz lost to Jonathan Lindeen…

    WHY IS THE 5TH WIN ELUDING EVERYBODY?! WHEN WILL THIS NIGHTMARE END?! JUST WHEN?! [bawling] WHY…WHY…WHY…?!

  3. Albert says:

    If Lindsey destroyed the buzzer will the cost be deducted from her winnings? It looked as if Lindsey were going to break that buzzer in half.

  4. Albert says:

    I love when the Finals are about something that I am currently studying. I got Morocco yesterday because I am studying exclaves and I got today’s Final because I am studying the UK monarchy. I only got half of Monday’s Final because I am not studying current Oscar winners.

    @William
    Such is live or c’est la vie. Always has been. Always will be. Only one thing is for sure. Everybody will die eventually. You can cheat the IRS but not death.

    • William Weyser says:

      What does that have to do with anything?

      • John says:

        @William
        I just answered your “why can’t things be perfect” question”. There was no “reply” under your post. So THAT’S the answer to your question. Things are never perfect.

  6. John says:

    In my opinion one thing in particular was the reason Lindsey did not win the elusive game #5:
    She was only 2/5 or 40 % in FJ. In game 2 she got lucky because it was a runaway, so she won the game anyway. But I guess you can go to the well only so often. Now she is at#12 overall on the ToC list, including Dhruv (CT winner) and the currently vacant TT winner’s spot (Larry Martin’s vacated place) that will be filled pretty soon but will not affect the standings as they will be by then.
    Btw, Elizabeth II is related by maternal lines not only to the Stuarts but all the way to William the Conqueror. One big family…..
    Either way: CONGRATULATIONS to Jonathan! Maybe he will come eventually through?
    Last 5 game winner was Alan Dunn on 10/18/18….the 1 six and 3 seven game winners won all before that date. John Presloid is out (Lindsey pushed him off the ToC list) and still six 4 game winners on the list, Alex Schmidt currently bringing up the rear.
    P.S.
    The total scores prior to FJ would indicate a few misses, plus no big bets on DDs either.

    • Richard Corliss says:

      John Presloid isn’t out, Jackie Fuchs is out.

      • John B./I. says:

        John Presloid IS out. You have Dhruv, then the new TT winner will be # 2, and then Josh Hill is #3 to Alex Schmidt=#15.Presloid will be #16 after the TT and Jackie #17. Unless somebody can’t make it to the ToC or does not respond to the invitation John Presloid is out. He is the first one however to fill a vacant spot above him.

        • Richard Corliss says:

          That’s different. Larry Martin is out. Lindsey took Jackie off the top 15.

      • John says:

        @Richard
        Jackie was already out, given the fact that the TT winner will take Larry Martin’s spot, not affecting anything else. Taking that into consideration John is out the moment the TT tournament has a winner, which will be in 2 months at the latest I think. Just check the list.

  7. Dal Higbee says:

    Man, guess they don’t want to have a five-game winner anymore, huh?

  8. Lou says:

    Well Lindsey played well with four wins and well is ahead of Dave leffler by about a thousand dollars. Furthermore still no five game winner yet but congratulations to John for winning today. I thought the ladies knew something about the royal houses but apparently not. Let’s see if John can build a string of wins. VJ and John what did you guys come up with as your response for today’s final?

    • VJ says:

      @Lou, I got this one right away and I assume that is because I was watching some documentaries on the English kings last month, so it wasn’t like I was trying to remember something I learned a long time ago.

      Congrats to Jonathan on getting FJ and winning the game. His “My Left Ear” answer on one of those Van Gogh clues was hilarious!

    • John says:

      Well, I had it right away, but then I studied history, especially Austrian/Habsburg and British history and on top of that I am an anglophile. The red herring was that both brothers were from the same house= Stuart (french spelling) or Stewart. So I had an unfair advantage. British family trees are so pretty much the most complicated thing you can TRY to unravel. I doubt that a single person (a computer yes, but not a person) can get it 100% right, especially since there were so many illegitimate offspring, some who were able to snatch the throne anyway. Not to mention the confusions between England (Wales, Scotland Ireland and at last Northern Ireland….Some monarchs had 3 titles : X of England (and Wales), XX of Scotland and XXX of Ireland. Historians are still divided whether Wales is a separate country or part of England…..British history is something you can study all your life and still not finish!! But then we are talking almost 1.000 years since William.

  9. JP says:

    There may never again be a 20-game winner. If the leader does not have a runaway going into FJ, I’m guessing the second place contestant probably has at least a 20% of winning on the FJ question. If that’s the case, you wouldn’t expect a contestant to survive too many more than 5 games where they do not have a runaway.

    In order for a very strong player to NOT have a runaway, the player just needs to have a couple of bad categories in one show, or one bad daily double result, or have one of their competitors have one good daily double result.

    • William Weyser says:

      When I said that 1 of the 2 Do’s for Lindsey to do, in order to break this curse was to ”DO Find The Daily Doubles Before Your Opponents Do, I forgot to add ”And these 2 things. 1. Bet Big If You Like The Category, and 2, GET IT RIGHT! Man, I’m never gonna get that week where something good happens on JEOPARDY! & Wheel Of Fortune EVERY SINGLE DAY! AM I?!

      • Richard Corliss says:

        @William Weyser, Nobody is perfect.

        • William Weyser says:

          Richard, I know that, but I really can’t get rid of this ”Why Can’t Things Be Perfect?” or ”Why Can’t Things Go The Way I Want Them To?” anxiety.
