WHAT IS AN APPLE TREE?

Sir Isaac Newton’s apple tree, purported to have inspired the laws of gravity, is more than world famous– its clones have been planted all around the world. According to Atlas Obscura, “A genetically identical tree is growing at Newton’s alma mater, Trinity College, Cambridge. Several more grow at Parkes Observatory in Australia, and another at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Descendants and clones of the Woolsthorpe Manor tree dot college campuses and research centers on every continent, except Antarctica.” Some of the tree display a plaque, attesting that it was grown from an apple from the original tree.

In August 2021, Snopes confirmed that the original four centuries old tree is still alive and thriving.

Tracy thought it might be a pea plant. She bet and lost her whole $6,600.

Molly went with roses. That only cost her $1,801. She finished with $9,599.

Erica came up with an oak tree. She lost her $11,000 bet, landing in second place with $1,800. That meant that a very surprised Molly Karol won the game. She will join Jessica Stephens in the finals.

FJ stumped me. “Charter oak” was all I could think of.

I saw the Sondheim show when it first opened on Broadway in May 1970, with original lead Dean Jones, who left the production quickly. Six months ago I went to a local college performance, and afterward I showed the actors/director/conductor my original Playbill. Were they impressed! Still my favorite show and score.

  2. Jason says:

Cambridge was a dead giveaway. Unlike Ismael, I thought this was an eminently solvable clue for erudite contestants.

As usual, though, I only got about half of the triple stumpers.

    • Jason says:

Oh, and, as indiscreet as it sounds, on Molly’s first appearance, the only word I could use to describe hey look was “constipated”. She looked like serious distress. Slightly different/better today, and congrats to her on moving on.

  3. VJ says:

Watch the “Best Idea Ever” video if you have an extra couple of minutes. I thought it was very funny 😁

That old song “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree” has been playing in my head on and off all day!
