Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/20/2018) in the category “Futuristic Fiction” was:

Fear of the social reorganization represented by an auto tycoon’s innovations inspired this 1932 novel

7x champ Ryan Fenster, a student from Washington, has now won $156,497. He’s going for his 8th win today as these players try to take him down: Emily Moore, a consultant from Georgia; and Dave Mattingly, a director of technology from Pennsylvania.

Round 1 Categories: History in Europe – Get Me Rewrite! – Handwear – Music of 20 Years Ago – Dead in Shakespeare – After Noon

Ryan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “History in Europe” under the $1,000 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,000, $2,800 more than Dave in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was the First Republic. That was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “BRAVE NEW WORLD”?

No. 3 on Mental Floss’s “15 Things You Might Not Know about Brave New World” says: “Sheer luck led Huxley to a major inspiration for Brave New World. On a boat traveling between Singapore and the Philippines, Huxley happened upon a copy of Henry Ford’s 1922 manifesto My Life and Work. Ford would go on to be a major character– something of a deity– in the society Huxley created in Brave New World.” That’s why the characters said things like “Good Ford” and “For Ford’s sake.”

Emily got it right. Her $3,998 bet brought her up to $7,998.

Ryan got it right, too. He bet it all and finished with $12,000.

Dave thought it was “Atlas Shrugged.” He didn’t bet anything because he already won the game with $26,200. Dave Mattingly is the new Jeopardy champ!

    I thought that Ryan will knock Josh Hill off from the leaderboard, but Dave’s $0 wager and becoming the new Jeopardy! champion with $22,600 means that next week, he could be a spoiler in the ToC.

    Remember in the interview? He said that he was learning every odds in football. Well, I’m afraid he’ll face a very tough opposition into the final week of the season, and when I say “spoiler”, I mean that next week, he could possibly be the last champion for Season 34.

  2. Chris says:

    Why was Ryan allowed to not phrase his answers as questions on several of his responses in the double jeopardy round? Has the rule changed? He just said toucan.

    • Richard Corliss says:

      No. the rule remains the same. It costs the contestants BIG time if they didn’t phrase it the form of a question.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Chris
      You may just have not heard it. The judges have extremely sophisticated listening devices and check every answer. Often you can’t hear something on TV but the judges can and would immediately intervene if an answer is given in the wrong form.The rules have NOT changed. Trust me on this! If an answer is accepted it WAS phrased correctly. Happens pretty often that you can’t hear the beginning of a reply on TV. So Ryan must have phrased accepted answers correctly, otherwise he would have been dinged immediately.

      • GregO says:

        @JohnB./I. – I rewound the DVR several times to watch Ryan’s toucan answer. They cut to him in time for a second or so to elapse before toucan came out of his mouth. His lips did not move to form “what is,” he said only toucan. Alex accepted his answer so quickly that maybe no time for the judges to disallow? I know that sometimes later in a game players get credited, but are there times when they get debited? I’m not a complete Jeopardy addict, and don’tknow.

        • VJ says:

          @GregO, I assumed Ryan said “what’s” real fast. All I heard was the “t’s” part and I can’t accurately depict what that sounds like – when some players do it, sometimes it sounds like “ssss” but sometimes I hear a “zzts” sound. .

          There was a recent incident where someone just blurted out the answer, was called wrong and another player picked it up. I can’t remember the exact game.

          P.S. — they only get penalized in the second round for this

        • John B./I. says:

          @GregO
          Basically every answer – even if there is the slightest possibility of a mistake is reviewed. And the judges have the last word. So even when Alex accepts the answer and the judges rule it wrong, the player gets dinged and they say it as soon as possible. Sometimes right away, sometimes after the next commercial break. The problem is this: if Alex accepts the answer and it is later reversed, the other players don’t get a chance to jump in like after a response that is immediately called wrong by Alex. So unless Alex gets corrected right away, it’ a disadvantage for the other 2 players.But then you can’t wait every time for a ruling, otherwise the game would last an hour….

  3. Louis says:

    Well, VJ, all I can say is that Ryan did well today and he had a good run but I am commending Dave for not betting everything. Furthermore ryan and Josh might go head to head during the tournament later on if I am right? Also I noticed that Dave was overtaking the game preventing Emily from trying to nail a daily double since she didn’t have much luck today. Finally, brave New world does that remind you guys of Pegasus In Space another science fiction novel VJ, John, and Richard?

    See you in the tournament of champions Ryan. Now, we will see if Dave can get the streak going for the final week of July.

    • VJ says:

      idk, Lou, I really don’t see how Ryan can be a threat to anyone in the ToC unless he does better in the first round than he did this week

      • John B./I. says:

        I think he will. The “coming back” was gravy and I think he learned a couple of lessons this time that might come in handy for the ToC.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      @Louis, I’m afraid that he’s going to be a spoiler going in for the last week of Season 34.

  4. John B./I. says:

    @JJ
    Congratulations for the only right prediction!
    And congrats to Dave who started the ToC list clock again, From the numbers it seems he did not only know a lot but was also very fast on the buzzer.
    Futuristic Fiction….FF. right down your alley, VJ, “F”unny coincidence :):)
    At least we stayed at 2/3 right in FJ, an improvement over last week, hope fully next week will be even better. And if Dave can string 3 together he will replace Wes since he has already more than half in one game of Wes’ total of 51K+ by not betting anything in FJ.

    From Doris and me: have a nice,relaxing weekend everybody and stay safe and hopefully in a cool place or even on a beach or near a lake, pool, etc! (Unfortunately no beach for me, “working” this weekend (91 and humid).See y’all Monday when we should find out if today was just a fluke or if Dave is going to keep his momentum.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    Didn’t work out for you and Emily today, but that’s okay Ryan. You won a ton of money and qualified for the next tournament of champions.

    See you later again, Ryan. But this time in the Tournament of Champions.
