The World Shipping Council has a table showing the 50 Top World Container Ports. Shanghai, China tops the list, followed by Singapore and Shenzhen, China.
Shanghai, as an English verb meaning to abduct men and force them to serve as crewmen on ships, has been in use since the 1850s according to Online Etymology. San Francisco’s Barbary Coast area was notorious for the practice: “Shanghaiing flourished openly in San Francisco for 60 years. Paid-off politicians winked at it, and repeated reform efforts failed. There was too much money to be made: As Richard Dillon notes in “Shanghaiing Days,” crimps and their collaborators could make $50,000 a year – the 19th century equivalent of the pay package for a high-level programmer at Twitter.” (SF Gate: … The Drinks had a Brutal Chaser)
Alice wrote down “steal port.” She didn’t bet anything and remained at $8,400.
Pidge came up with Alcatraz. She only lost $1,800 so she finished with $13,400.
Kalen wrote down “lift.” He bet and lost it all and Pidge won! Fantastic catchup and wise bet. Her 2-day total is $31,001.
A triple stumper from each round:
RUSSIAN FIRST NAME’S THE SAME ($1000) Shcharansky & Karpov
SAME TITLE, DIFFERENT SONG ($400) Justin Bieber (2015) & Beyonce (2016)

congrats to pidge on her second win. But i dont remember san francisco having any ports though. VJ do you know of any other ports other than shanghai or shenzhen topping the list of busy ports?
@Lou, There is a link to the Top 50 container ports in the first sentence after the FJ answer. The first one on there in the USA is Los Angeles at No. 19,
Pidge congrats on your 2nd win. But, Alcatraz? 🙂
LOL, Jacob. Couldn’t believe no one knew that one. I didn’t have time to post on the CotD today but was in agreement with Eric that they’d all get it, and of course, I liked the quote coincidence.
I might be the only one who ever saw it, but there was an episode of Bonanza called “San Francisco” where Ben Cartwright almost got shanghaied.
I have 11 clues online from this match, including the Psychology category which had my favorite clue — the $1600 opposite of multitasking one. It used to be called “paying attention.” ROFL
Seth Wilson appeared on CNBC business channel in the 5 pm hour. He played a business version of Jeopardy along with 4 business traders. Fun to watch. I would imagine the clip will be on Youtube soon.
Thanks for letting us know, Jacob, I would like to see it.
Nice makeover, petit lapin.’Gonna make your own carrot beer?
You said you got FJ from the English verb hint. That hint actually confused me, as I have never heard the word shanghai as a verb. So I ignored it, and got it from ‘the busiest container port’ part of the clue.
I’m glad that you approve, ma diabolique pomme de terre, I wouldn’t want to incur your wrath lol. Interesting how we each came to the correct answer differently.
