Final Jeopardy: Newly Independent Nations (12-2-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/2/2015) in the category “Newly Independent Nations” was:
Prior to South Sudan, this European country was the most recent one to gain independence and be recognized by the United States.
2x champ Joyce Hshieh brought her winnings up to $26,802 yesterday. In her third game, she is up against: Brad Rudy, from Marietta, GA; and Nicole Stanley, from Portland, OR.
Round 1: Joyce found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Working Book Titles.” She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.
John Steinbeck changed “Something That Happened” to this title a reference to a Robert Burns poem. show
Joyce finished in the lead with $6,400. Brad was second with $2,600 and Nicole was last with $1,600.
Round 2: Joyce found the first Daily Double in “1600.” She bet $2,000 and thought it was Shoka. That was WRONG.
In 1658, perhaps as he was busy admiring his Taj Mahal, his son of Aurangzeb deposed him and took over the Mughal empire. show
Joyce found the last Daily Double in “Podcast.” She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.
In Freudian theory this 8-letter term is our conscience. Its namesake comedic podcast is “improvised and analyzed.” show
Joyce finished in the lead with $12,000. Brad was next with $11,400 and Nicole was in third place with $5,600.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
On February 19, 2008, the New York Times reported: “Kosovo won the recognition of the United States and its biggest Western European allies on Monday, while earning rebukes and rejections from Serbia, Russia and a disparate mix of states the world over who face their own separatist movements at home.” The previous day, then Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice issued a press release confirming that event. You can read it on the U.S. State Dept’s archive.
Nicole got it right. She bet it all and finished with $11,200.
Brad thought it was Serbia (independent: 2006). He lost his $5,000 bet and finished with $6,400.
Joyce also got it right. She bet $801 and won the game with $12,801. Her 3-day total is $39,403.
As I posted on Spoiler Talk, I was preempted and I know a great many other people were too. Jacob send me the info after the game aired on his local affiliate station. So a BIG THANKS to Jacob. We wouldn’t have much of a recap today, if any at all, without his help. ~ VJ
2 years ago:: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Asia”
Consisting of a peninsula and 2 islands, it was the longest-lasting European colony in Asia: 442 years. show

I don’t understand Joyce’s $801 at all. Notice that if Nicole doubled up, which she did, that would bring her up to $11,200 and had Joyce missed with that $801, that would have dropped her down to $11,199, she would have lost to Nicole by $1, and that would have been a heartbreaker. Joyce, you can’t count on 1 player to get it wrong in Final Jeopardy!, and you should have BET IT ALL, and got the 12th spot in my 6th version of the Tournament Of Champions, although I’m not sure what Bill Cossen would have had to say about that, because had Joyce doubled up, her 3-day total would have been $50,602, and that would have been enough to tie with Bill Cossen, the lowest scorer from my most recent version of the Tournament Of Champions.
@Rhonda & Cece, you are very kind with your comments. As I said to vj when I sent her the info “I feel that at Fikkle Fame we are Jeopardy family and it’s great when we can help each other.”
VJ always accommodate us and our curiosity about Jeopardy so it’s really important imo to assist her when she needs us as well.
Very true and very well said, Jacob. Thanks again!
My 7:00 pm Jeopardy on ABC was preempted but the 7:30 Jeopardy on one of the affiliate stations was not. Let’s hear it for affiliates! No longer will I make fun of affiliate stations.
Imo Jeopardy should show the game on Youtube for 12/2/2015.
I agree. They could show it on youtube, their site or their facebook.
btw, here is something interesting that relates to whether a station decides to air preempted episodes. It’s 2 years old and from a Dallas station but at least it explains how their contracts affect these decisions
Many thanks to you, Jacob for making it possible for VJ to do her recap. You are so lucky you were able to watch!!
Thank you, Jacob! So you can view J! either at 7:00 or 7:30? Lucky you!
Anyway, it looks like Brad played a decent game; Joyce got all 3 DD’s but he had only $600 less than her going into FJ. Now three victories for Joyce, however small, still victories.
P.S. I was preempted too
yeah, but I blew it on my prediction of one right and not Joyce. I blamed Bulgaria. LOL!!
Yeah, that “ia” category really tripped the players up yesterday; my bf thought it hilarious. And today Joyce gets Kosovo—imagine that!
It was hilarious. As bad as the Bulgaria response was, Peru was even worse.
And Latvia just put me over the edge (and the bf ROFL).
On the Spoiler talk today, you posted a Steinbeck DD and, coincidentally, there was another Steinbeck DD in today’s game. And the “ROGER THAT” DD, I wonder if Jennings did Roger Craig that baby, lol.
@Cece, yes I get to see Jeopardy 2 times. If it’s a really good game, believe it or not, I watch it both times. Am I hooked or not?
Sometimes the affiliate, Fox21, station’s Jeopardy is preempted due to sports. As a matter of fact, moreso than ABC. C’est la vie!!
I was just lucky yesterday!
