Final Jeopardy: Asia (12-4-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/4/2013), in the category “Asia” was:

Consisting of a peninsula and 2 islands, it was the longest-lasting European colony in Asia: 442 years.

New champ Carlos Ross won a whopping $34,801 yesterday. Today he’ll go for a second win against these two players: Brock Thompson, from Washington, DC; and Kaya Blauvelt, from Portland, OR.

Brock found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Finlandia.” He was in second place with $2,400, half of Carlos’ lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

One of the 2 countries that took turns controlling Finland from the 1100s to its 1917 independence. show

Carlos finished in the lead with $7,000. Kaya was second with $5,200 and Brock was last with $2,600.

Brock found the first Daily Double in “After I Lost the Presidential Election.” He was now in second place with $5,400, and had $2,400 less than Carlos’ lead. He bet $2,400 and he was RIGHT.

I helped my wife run for president & later, successfully for the senate. show

Carlos found the last Daily Double in “Calendar.” In the lead with $18,600, he had $5,000 more than Kaya in second place. He bet $2,500 and said the Ides of March. That was TMI so he was WRONG.

John Wilkes Booth saw himself as a dictator-slayer, so his original target date was April 13, which is this on the Roman calendar. show

Carlos finished in the lead with $14,900. Kaya was next with $13,600 and Brock was in third place with $8,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MACAU?

Macau was both the first and last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century. In 1557 Macau was rented to Portugal by the Chinese empire as a trading port. The Portuguese administered the city under Chinese authority and sovereignty until 1887, when Macau became a colony of the Portuguese empire. Sovereignty over Macau was transferred back to China on 20 December 1999. (wikipedia)

Brock wrote down “Singapore.” He didn’t bet anything so he remained at $8,600.

Kaya thought it was Hong Kong. That cost her $3,601 and she finished with $9,999.

Carlos got it right after crossing out Hong Kong. He bet it all so he won with this match with $29,800, and he now has an impressive 2-day total of $64,601. Carlos just needs to win $1,595 in one more game to get on the TOC list!

Well! I enjoyed that particular match on Jeopardy! I don’t get to a chance to watch the show that often, but thought that match was one of the best I have seen. There is a new BBC-produced edutainment series that will be starting production sometime next year and we were going to have some famous people / interesting people participate in helping a veterinarian who has a hoise call practice modelled

I love Jeopardy and that was a good match. Carlos is a great champion, he got a tough one right and the thumbs-up smile was cute. I made all the same mistakes at home, such as immediately blurting out “Ides of March” without thinking. But, mostly, I will confess I watched and thought, this contestant Kaya is such a combination of smart, beautiful and poised that some day soon we’ll say she was on Jeopardy and no one will remember she didn’t win. To then read all the comments here, I guess I am not the only one out there who thought that. Best wishes, Kaya! And to you, Carlos, love you, too!

Kaya Is Gorgeous! Will You Marry Me?!?!
Most Beautiful Woman On TV Ever!!!

    • rich says:

i agree, she’s beautiful ! hate to see her do the playboy thing. i believe she’ll become rich.. and marry that guy she used to date that was a gun smith..make at least 932.00..and yell yahoo.. ! does that make sense ? hope it does to her.

      • Kaya says:

I am not actually going to be in Playboy. That publication is much too classy for my tastes. KIDDING.

        • rich says:

thx ! i feel really stupid. and kaya, i wish you did win, but everyone on that nite seemed like really nice people. sometimes you watch the show and there’s someone on there you can’t stand. i think you did really well ! don’t be pissed. 🙂

        • rich says:

hi kaya, i know you weren’t going to do a playboy think. i was just going along with the whole insinuation of it all ! whats important, at least for me, isn’t money or fame. it’s seeing a beautiful girl like you that’s smart and has, from what i can tell, a really good sense of humor. it’s the day to day living and who you spend it with, that’s important.

    • Andy says:

Well, Portland Guy, you’re in the right place! She is very pretty, and smart, too, Alex was quick to mention a fiance, wasn’t he?

      • rich says:

she’s not married yet ! besides haven’t you ever tried hard for something really worth it. i think that’s a bit of a defeatist attitude. i’d get up early in the morning and run half a marathon in wooden clogs for a girl like that. now can’t we all just try to get along !

Kaya – most beautiful Jeopardy contestant ever!

not having seen the show yet i guess carlos won with 29.800.00??
anyway, he was right to bet it all. had he bet the presumed 12.301 and been wrong, he would have lost with 2.599 (though we had winners with less….). so he added some cash to bring home a nice souvenir. too bad he added “of march” at the dd, otherwise he might be on the toc list already! the old ” si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses”……
TODAY was a no brainer for me , but to my utter shame i have to admit i had no idea who wilson philips is until 2 days ago….and this from somebody who REALLY likes the beach boys AND the mamas and the papas…..THERE, somebody just took away my portofino!!!

    • vj says:

yeah, I was surprised that he added March to his Ides reply, but maybe he thought it was a trick question and March was in April on the Roman calendar.

aaaa pointed out once that the contestants have to win 3 games to get on the TOC list, so getting that DD wouldn’t have helped him in that regard.

I knew Wilson Phillips — I have always been able to keep up to date on popular music through the years with younger sibs and my own kids. W-P had 2 No. 1 hits in 1990. Ricky Nelson’s twins, who formed the group Nelson, had one No. 1 hit that year.

      • john blahuta says:

maybe he thought too MUCH. the ides were in every month in the old roman calendar, march, may, july and october on the 15th, all other months the THIRTEENTH. so APRIL 13 should have been a clue. not so much april, but the 13!no ides on the 13th in march/may/july/oct. BUT IT’S EASIER TO PLAY ARMCHAIR QB AFTERWARDS…. with history my main spiel and hobby i happened to know the sequence, and you are right: j is known for trick questions……:). even a dd applies time pressure, PLUS everybody looks at YOU for the right question.
