Final Jeopardy: Historic Americans (7-14-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/14/2015), in the category “Historic Americans” was:

The debate team at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire is named for this man who entered the Academy in 1796.

New champ Phil Salathé scored a runaway yesterday and won $22,600. In his second game, he is up against these two players: Val Narehood, from Tyrone, PA; and Ben Hemmens, from Falls Church, VA.

Round 1: Phil found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Let It Snow” under the $800 clue. It was the first clue chosen in that category and there were only 5 clues left on the board after it. He was in the lead with $4,800, $600 more than Ben in second place. He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.

Phil finished in the lead with $7,800. Ben was second with $6,200 and Val was last with $2,000.

Round 2: Val found the first Daily Double in “The Mongols” under the $1,200 clue. She was in third place with $2,800, $7,000 less than Phil’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was the Philippines. That was WRONG.

Ben finished in the lead with $16,200. Phil was next with $13,400 and Val was in third place with $4,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS DANIEL WEBSTER?

“Daniel Webster was born on January 18, 1782, in Salisbury (now Franklin), New Hampshire and educated at Phillips (Exeter) Academy and Dartmouth College. He studied law, taught briefly and was admitted to the New Hampshire bar in 1805. His law practice soon led him into political activities and he represented his home state in Congress from 1813 to 1817. … In 1816 Webster moved to Boston and became one of the nation’s leading attorneys. His participation in the Dartmouth College case and McCulloch v. Maryland left an enormous imprint on American constitutional law. Webster also matured into one of the great orators of his era, delivering notable speeches at the bicentennial of the founding of Plymouth in 1820 and the dedication of the Bunker Hill Monument in 1825.” (United States History.com)

Val thought it was John Adams (Harvard, Class of 1755). She bet and lost it all.

Phil got it right. He bet $4,599 so he finished with $17,999.

Ben also got it right. He bet $10,601 so he took over the title with a very nice $26,801 win.

Fascinating to have a snow category when the last of snow in Boston just melted today. Surprised at the triple stumper on Tina Brown and Zane Grey.

    Congrats Ben. Good game.

Phil must wish he bet more on that Beau Geste DD. Maybe he would have if it hadn’t been the first clue he picked in the category.

Anyway, yes, Ben and Phil were tied at one point, and Ben got the edge near the end.

We’re all skunked on the predictions! (But I figured that would be the case watching the game).

@Jacob – how about that FJ clue from 2 years ago? Talk about recycling!

Yep. The writers love to recycle clues. I think this is why some champs say they prepare for J by watching the shows and/or studying the archives.

Cool they had a “tv dads” category and Ben is a stay-at-home dad. I’m still stuck on the ts on Tina Brown. Hope she wasn’t watching. LOL!
