Donald Driver Has Street Named for Him; Would Unretire if Packers Called

Retired Green Bay Packers wide receiver and Dancing With the Starts champ Donald Driver had a busy Father’s Day weekend.   Driver, one of the most popular players in Green Bay history, returned to Green Bay and had a street named after him on Saturday.  There is a Donald Driver statue nearby.  On Sunday, he held his annual charity softball game, featuring several current and former Packers, in front of a sellout crowd of over 9000 at Fox Cities Stadium, a Midwest League minor league ballpark in Appleton, south of Green Bay.

At a Q and A with reporters, Driver mentioned that he has been contacted by several unnamed teams about returning to the field, but he’s turned them all down.  “I talked to so many different guys and every guy that I’ve talked to said they wish they never went to another team,” Driver said.  He did say that if the Packers called him, he’d return for one more season with Green Bay.

That’s not likely to happen, as Driver played a limited role in his final season in Green Bay. The Packers relied more on James Jones, Jordy Nelson, and especially, Randall Cobb at wide out.  The Packers also drafted two receivers to help fill the void left by the departure of Greg Jennings via free agency.  However, if the Packers receivers get hit with an epidemic of injuries and they have to bring somebody in, Driver could be someone to consider, as he knows the offense and could contribute more quickly than someone brought in from the outside.  He’d certainly be welcomed back for an encore by Packers fans.
