Top Ranked Gonzaga Basketball Off to 2-0 Start

College basketball’s season got started a couple of weeks later than normal–and like college football, a lot of games have already been postponed or cancelled due to Covid 19–but it’s here, and #1 ranked Gonzaga got off to a rousing start.

The perennial basketball powerhouse from Spokane, Washington, opened the season against another perennial powerhouse, #6 Kansas, at the Rocket Mortgage Ft. Myers Tip Off on Thanksgiving Day. In a game that was much better viewing than the two NFL games played that day between teams with losing records, Gonzaga scored 102 points on the Jayhawks on the way to a 102-90 victory.

Gonzaga was led by sophomore forward Drew Timme, who scored 25 points and had six rebounds. Freshman guard Jalen Suggs, one of the top recruits in the country, scored 24 and had a team leading eight assists, one heck of a debut and against a top ten team, no less. Five players scored in double figures for Gonzaga. The victory was career number 600 for coach Mark Few.

Gonzaga followed that up with a 90-67 win over Auburn on the day after Thanksgiving and is 2-0 on the season heading into a game against #15 West Virginia on December 2nd, which will be followed up by a game against #2 Baylor in Indianapolis on December 5th. Last year, the Bulldogs were 31-2 but of course, the NCAA Tournament was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
