The Affair: A Lotta Noah and Helen in Season 5 Debut

and a little bit of Joanie. The first episode (8/25/2019) of the fifth season of The Affair jumped around quite a bit. It began with Noah at a meeting with a movie star named Sasha Mann who is going to star in and direct a film adaptation of Noah’s book “Descent.” While Sasha picked Noah’s brain about the book, one of two young girls sitting nearby kept giving Noah the eye. The girls got up and approached the table. The one who was eyeballing Noah asked Sasha if she could give him her phone number because she loves him. She wants Sasha to call her so she can show him just how much. This was funny just because it must have been quite a blow to Noah’s self-esteem. The other parts of the show that he was in was about him butting in where he was not wanted.

Noah cut the meeting short to go to Vik’s funeral with his girlfriend, Janelle. Why would those two go to Vik’s funeral? Don’t ask us. But Janelle got a real sense of her insignificance back at Helen’s house when Noah paid very little attention to her and when Helen’s mother got catty when introduced, saying it was nice to meet another one of Noah’s women! The last straw came when Helen’s father mistook for her the help. Did Noah go after his lady love? Hell no. He stuck around to clean up and watch Vik’s video message to those he left behind and get a good sense of his insignificance. Vik knew that Noah’s daughter Whitney was getting married but Noah didn’t. Vik talked about what a wonderful relationship he had with Noah’s children, unlike their relationship with their real father.

The last segment of the show was about Vik actually dying at home at the same time the next-door neighbor Sierra was having his child at her house. This was supposed to be about Helen but who shows up unexpectedly? Why, Noah, of course. The kids are staying with him and Noah says they want to come back and say their goodbyes to Vik. Well, there’s no time for that because the hospice nurse called Helen in as the end was imminent. As she watched Vik, Noah suddenly knocked on the door and asked to come in. Helen said no but then she heard a baby crying. Noah had Sierra and the baby with him. Sierra put the baby boy on Vik’s chest, told him the baby’s name is Eddie, and Vik died. The nurse said he knew (hopefully about the baby and not that Noah was in the room).

The Joanie part came in between those two parts and took place in the future. Joanie, who was about 6 years old when last seen, is now grown up and married and the mother of two kids. We know that one, at least, is adopted. About all I got out of this part was that Joanie is a very unhappy woman. She is going to be the same age on her next birthday that Alison was when she died. Joanie misses Cole, although we don’t really know what happened to him yet. Well, that’s not all. She lives in a “smart” house and has a great husband. She has anxiety medicine and ignores the instructions on the bottle to only take one.

No recap for episode 2 of “The Affair”, VJ?

    • VJ says:

Well, JJ, that was such a dumb episode, I figured I could sum that up in one paragraph and use it for the opening of the Episode 3 recap if it gets any better.

I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who was like “WTH??” when they opened up with Janelle’s version of Vik’s funeral. Way to drag it out. That can be summed up as “Janelle was exposed to way more white condescension than Noah was aware of. Of course, Noah was barely aware of Janelle’s presence to begin with. No wonder she ran back to her ex-hubby.”

Then there was the Helen part: “Mr. Big Movie Star takes a Big Interest in emotionally detached Helen, invites her to his home and nearly breaks her nose with a basketball.”

Then another 5 minutes of Joanie: “A very disturbed Joanie has a hard time instructing her toilet to flush all the pills she ingested but succeeds when she calls the toilet an a-hole and remembers the code. Then she heads off to Montauk on an ecology mission, related to her job, where we hope her segments will be increased to at least 10 minutes that will include some explanation as to why she is such a mess.”

I couldn’t agree more – this season is off to a pathetic start…

        • VJ says:

Yeah, at the end of last season, we talked about what Noah and Helen would possibly have to do with a Joanie storyline. So this past and future stuff is apparently how they chose to deal with that issue and so far, I really have nothing good to say about it!

        Sounds just horrible, VJ!

@ALL – Geez guys… I wasn’t expecting such an outpouring of “well wishes” re: my knee, BUT I truly appreciate your kind words. You folks are the BEST!!! 😊
Really, it’s nothing, just a basic scope to clean up a “complex” (whatever that means?!) meniscus tear. I simply mentioned it here to share that I may have a “forced” opportunity to catch up on some programs that I’ve been hoping to see. (And I agree ladies – Stephen Dorff is awesome in this thus far!)

I didn’t realize it was starting up again… I thought the final season kicked off in Sept.
We just finished “Orange Is the New Black” and we catch episodes of “Billions” when time allows BUT we will watch “The Affair”. Karen & I are WAY too invested in that so we’re all in, plus I want to see how they fill the void that Ruth Wilson/Alison Bailey left.
I’m having minor knee surgery (arthroscopic out-patient stuff) but I will need to rest/ice it for a day or two, so I might have a chance to binge watch and catch up on many of the shows that are on the “wish list”! (I started Season 3 of “True Detective” w/ Mahershala Ali over the weekend… Through 4 episodes, it’s been pretty engaging.)

    • VJ says:

Hope everything goes well with the knee, JJ. I liked that season of “True Detective.” Thought Steven Dorff was great in it, too

    • rhonda says:

Hope your knee surgery goes well, too, JJ. That’s for reminding me about season 3 of True Detective, I heard that it was very good and then forgot all about it! I like Steven Dorff a lot, too.

    • Jacob ska says:

@JJ, wishing you well after your surgery buddy.

  4. rhonda says:

I’m not sure if I’m going to start watching this again, VJ, I might just read your recaps instead.

    • VJ says:

LOL, Rhonda — I guess that depends on how long I last with this season!! It seems like such a weird format with Noah and Helen’s story continuing from where they left off in the last season and then they jump to the future for Joanie’s story. I bet they thought that was clever 🙄
