Supporting Cast: Carl’s First Sentencing – Shameless

Here are some members of the supporting cast who appeared in “Carl’s First Sentencing”, the 9th episode of Season 5 of Shameless (3/15/2015).

Sasha Alexander played Helene Runyon, the professor of the Critical Theory class Lip signed up for. Michael Reilly Burke played her husband, Theo, who returned home from a business trip to find his nude wife in the bedroom with a very nervous Lip. But the Runyons have an open marriage and Theo offered to make Lip breakfast.

Many Shameless fans have wondered from time to time what is so wildly attractive about Lip. Helene’s huge attraction, at least, was explained. He reminded her of Austrian figurative painter, Egon Schiele. Lip thought she was talking about a woman named Sheila but she showed him Schiele’s self-portrait. Whaddya think of the resemblance?

Lawrence A. Mandley played Carl’s public defender, Sam Rayburn, who made a futile effort to provide the best defense for a client who was determined to do time. Roxana Brusso played Judge Rita Gaither who was only too happy to accommodate Carl’s wishes after he made a very ill-advised remark: “If Your Honor would lose 20 pounds, I would consider tapping that.”

Rena Strober played Chuckie’s public defender, who was appalled at Sammi’s instructions to her son on how to avoid getting raped in prison, but not appalled enough to do anything particularly helpful to mitigate Chuckie’s possible sentence, other than to point out the results of his IQ test. It was left up to Sammi to tell the judge how Carl led Chuckie astray and she did. Let’s not forget that Frank Gallagher is the one who set this whole thing up. That just may come to light someday.

Tessa Auberjonois played the clinic doctor who gave Ian lithium and Olanzapine for the paranoia. We assume she was a doctor since she was handing him drugs — the same drugs he got from the hospital and flushed in the last episode, “Uncle Carl”. Only he was given a third drug by the hospital (aripiprazole) that he wasn’t given this time, nor was it mentioned. The doctor said if the lithium was not optimal, they could try Divalproex or Tegretol.

Other Shameless moments:

• Sammi and Chuckie’s last name is Slott. Chuckie’s full name is Charles Nevins Slott.
• Carl’s middle name is Francis.
• Sean’s ex is moving to Pittsburgh with their son, Will. He can’t get permission to leave Illinois from his probation officer. No idea how long he is on probation from this episode.
