Ryan Cochran-Siegle Wins Alpine Skiing Olympic Silver Medal 50 Years After His Mother Won Gold

At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan, 21 year old Barbara Ann Cochran won the Gold Medal in the Women’s Slalom by the narrowest of margins, 0.02 seconds over Frances Daniele Debernard. Flash forward 50 years to the 2020 Winter games in Beijing, where Ryan Cochran-Siegle, the 29 year old son of Barbara, made his own attempt at Olympic success. Ryan had skied in four events at the PyeongChang Games in South Korea in 2018, but his best finish was 11th in the Giant Slalom.

His first event was the Men’s Downhill, and a 14th place finish. Next up was the Men’s Super G (an event that was not part of the Olympics back in ’72) and this time Ryan reached the podium for the first time in his Olympic Career, winning the Silver Medal just 0.04 seconds behind Austria’s Matthias Mayer, who also won the Gold in 2018. Ryan’s medal winning run was just three days short of the 50th anniversary of his mother’s win at Sapporo.

Ryan has one more competition in these Olympics; he’ll race in the Men’s Alpine Combined later this week.
