Royals Have Seven Game Winning Streak After Sweep of Astros
The streaking Kansas City Royals (9-4) beat the Houston Astros 13-3 on April 11th, completing a three game sweep of the Astros and extending their winning streak to seven games, currently the longest one of the young season. It’s understandable if you have to take a moment to grasp that, since the Royals were 56-106 last season, which was the second worse record in the majors.
The Royals have been pounding the ball this season: they outscored the Astros 28-8 in the three game sweep. Leading the way is rising superstar Bobby Witt Jr. The shortstop is batting .358 with five doubles, two triples, and four homers in his 19 hits this season. He’s also scored 13 runs in 13 games, and has three stolen bases. His OPS is 1.169. Outfielders M.J. Melendez and Nelson Velazquez are each hitting .325. Catcher Salvador Perez has been one of the more productive backstops in his career, and he’s starting out well this year with a pair of homers and 10 RBI while hitting .333.
The starting pitching has been stellar, with Seth Lugo (2-0, 1.45 ERA) and Brady Singer (2-0, 0.98) leading the way. The Royals signed veteran righthander Michael Wacha as a free agent in the off season; last year with San Diego, Wacha was 14-4 with a 3.22 ERA in 24 starts. He’s 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA this season.
While there’s a long way to go in this season, Kansas City fans should have an entertaining and competitive baseball team to watch this summer rather than just waiting for the Kansas City Chiefs training camp to open.
