Ray Donovan Recap: Passport and a Gun (S7 E8)

The heat was turned up in lots of way in “A Passport and a Gun”, the eighth episode of Ray Donovan’s Season 7. It began with Gary O’Malley attempting to murder Jim Sullivan but shooting his chauffeur, Roberto, instead. While Gary was doing that, Ray was cooking breakfast at Molly Sullivan’s place (we were so wrong that Molly would break up with Ray after last week). Ray told Molly about how her father stopped him from killing Mickey when he was 10 years old. Ray went to his office where he found Smitty sleeping on the couch. Smitty told him about his interview with Detective Perry and how he stuck to the alibi. Then a collect call came in from Gary O’Malley from jail. He wanted Ray to come down and talk to him.

Ronny rigged a surveillance camera. He hid it above the safe ~ Gary O’Malley

On the way out, Ray ran into Declan Sullivan, who wanted Ray to get the stocks that Daryll stole back. Declan taunted Ray about his relationship with Molly, about Father Danny’s abuse of Ray and called Daryll “Sammy Davis Donovan.” Ray ignored Declan and went to see Gary at the jail. Gary was certain that Jim Sullivan murdered his father and brother and told Ray about Ronny’s surveillance camera above the safe. Ray knew Jim Sullivan wasn’t going to be on that tape but said he would check it out. Ray had a flashback of doing Jim Sullivan’s collection work in his teenage years.

I keep having dreams about those cops ~ Smitty

Back at the office, Smitty got Ray’s okay to tag along to Danny O’Malley’s. Smitty would not shut his mouth and, at first, we thought he was just being his usual dumb self. What was the moment when it became obvious what he was up to? For us, it was when Smitty said “Daryll said that you went crazy on that cop. He said that you shot him like 20 times.” Too bad it didn’t dawn on Ray, who responded: “I shot him, he’s dead. What’s the difference?” This was after Smitty went into Danny O’Malley’s house, despite Ray’s order to stay in the car, and watched the surveillance camera tape. Outloud, Smitty stated that Daryll was on the tape and that Ray erased the whole thing! That little weasel was protecting his own butt.

Ray went back to the jail and told Gary O’Malley that there was nothing on the tape and he would see about getting him a lawyer. O’Malley suspected that Ray was still working for Jim Sullivan and could not believe it: “After everything he did to your family? To your wife and to your sister?” Ray asked him what he was talking about but Gary became enraged and told him to find out from Jim Sullivan. This prompted two more flashbacks. In the last, teenage Ray saw his sister Bridget arrive at Jim Sullivan’s to babysit Molly. Gary drove her there and when he realized Ray was working for Sullivan, Gary said: “Jesus, Ray. Seriously?”

Back in the present, Ray called Molly and asked her to find out if there were any tapes from the fall of ’87 (“around the time Bridget passed”). Molly said she would check and she took two tapes right from under her sleeping father’s nose.

Smitty asked Ray if he could sleep at the office again. Ray okayed that, went outside and noticed a white police surveillance van. He went back in and demanded that Smitty take his shirt off. Smitty was all full of apologies and “I didn’t know what else to do. They were gonna come after Bridget.” Ray stared at him, wheeled around and walked back outside. He was ordered to get on the ground by a gun-wielding Detective Perry. Ray would not comply and simply said: “You wanna talk? Let’s talk.”

Other storylines:

Daryll called Jasmine and told her to bring him his passport and his gun, as well as her own passport. Declan was inside Daryll’s apartment when she got the stuff. All he had to do now was trail Jasmine to catch up with Daryll. He offered Daryll two million in cash for the stock certificates. Daryll and Jasmine went for it and talked about taking off to the Galapagos or the Caribbean. Declan showed up with another guy and gave Daryll a satchel that looked like it had two million in it until Daryll moved the top stacks and saw what was underneath. He turned around to see the second guy pointing a gun at him while Declan demanded the stocks. Daryll told Jasmine to pop the trunk. She did then she came up and shot the second guy. They jumped in the car. Declan grabbed the gun and began firing. Jasmine was hit and died in the car. Daryll just continued to drive around.

Bunchy was supposed to be staking out Daryll’s apartment before Declan got there but he went upstate with Terry to retrieve an emerald necklace that Dolores had given the Shaman. Dolores was on her deathbed in the hospital and she wanted to leave this necklace to her daughter. It had been in her family for three generations. When she requested it back, she was told they didn’t have it and she must be misremembering. Terry delivered a few uppercuts to the Shaman that helped him remember where the necklace was.
